Robert Dawson, an American English teacher and correspondent for Taiwan\u2019s premier English language radio station ICRT, recently shared his journey on Radio Islam International<\/a>. Speaking late into the night from Taiwan, Robert offered insights into his decades-long experience living in East Asia.<\/p>\n

Originally from Washington, D.C., Dawson moved to Taiwan over 20 years ago to learn Chinese. What began as a language-learning adventure transformed into a lifelong connection to the island. \u201cAbout a month after I got here, I met my wife, and she locked me down. I\u2019ve never left,\u201d he joked. The opportunity to open his own school\u2014a rarity in the government- and business-dominated environment of D.C.\u2014sealed his commitment to staying.<\/p>\n

Dawson spoke about the initial challenges of adjusting to life in Taiwan, including cultural differences and the island\u2019s compactness. However, he praised the hospitality and warmth of the Taiwanese people, who made his transition smooth. \u201cWhen I first arrived, people would hand me little gifts to welcome me,\u201d he said. Taiwan\u2019s safety, vibrant food culture, and its evolving modern landscape further endeared him to his new home.<\/p>\n

Despite ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China, Dawson described daily life as largely unaffected. While the media often portrays the relationship as volatile, he emphasized the mutual economic dependence between the two nations, particularly in industries like technology. \u201cTaiwan makes the chips for iPhones, which are assembled in China by Taiwanese companies. That interdependence helps stabilize relations,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Although he has found fulfilment in Taiwan, Dawson admitted to missing the vast open spaces and family ties back in the U.S. Nevertheless, the sense of community and opportunity he discovered in Taiwan continues to inspire him. His story is a testament to adaptability, cultural immersion, and the possibilities that come with embracing life beyond borders.<\/p>\n
