Despite the challenges of a daily commute between Witbank and Middelburg, she achieved 8 distinctions and secured acceptance to study medicine at Wits University and the University of Pretoria. However, she has chosen to delay her tertiary education to focus on completing her Hifz (memorisation of the Quran).

Speaking about her decision, Zahra shared, “My decision to prioritise my Hifz came from my love for the Quran and attachment to it. Throughout matric, it was my Hifz that kept me grounded and motivated. Completing my Hifz will ensure peace and clarity before I begin my professional journey.” She also credited her parents and educator (Āpa/Muallimah) for encouraging her to put “Deen over Dunya”.

Her journey was far from easy. The commute between Witbank and Middelburg, while manageable in distance, was often tiring and time-consuming. However, she turned this challenge into an opportunity. “I would study, review notes, go over my sabak (lesson), or mentally prepare for the day during the commute,” she explained.

The matric year presented other challenges, including balancing her academic responsibilities with her Quraan studies. Zahra described moments when the pressure felt overwhelming but highlighted the importance of her support system. “My family, friends, and parents were my rock. I also placed my trust in Allah and relied on Him to guide me through.”

As she looks ahead to a future in medicine, Zahra draws a connection between her faith and her chosen career path. “Islam encourages us to serve others with compassion and humility, which are essential traits for a doctor. Medicine, in many ways, is an extension of our Deen as it involves caring for the most vulnerable.”

She also offered advice to younger students: “Start from the very first day and stay consistent with your studies. Manage your time well, ensure your intentions are pure, and do it for the pleasure of Allah. Look after your Deen, wake up for Tahajjud before exams, and read lots of Istighfar.”

Zahra’s story is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and a strong support system. As she embarks on the next chapter of her journey, her community and beyond are rooting for her success.

LISTEN to the full interview with Ml Junaid Kharsany and matriculant Zahra Osman, here.

Azra Hoosen | ah@radioislam.co.za 18 January 2025 | 09:00 CAT 2 min read Zahra Osman, a matriculant from Witbank, has inspired many with her incredible achievements and unwavering dedication to her faith.
