(Image: MSN)

With South Africa consistently ranking among the highest in global road fatalities, urgent interventions are needed to curb alcohol-related accidents. In response, Aware.org recently convened key stakeholders for the Aware Road Safety Roundtable, a crucial discussion aimed at promoting responsible road use ahead of the Easter weekend, a period notorious for high crash rates.

The CEO of Aware.org, Mokebe Thulo, emphasized that the roundtable was not just another “talk shop” but an initiative designed to drive real, actionable solutions. “The objective is to promote safer driving behaviours in South Africa. Drunk driving remains one of the leading contributors to road deaths, and this discussion brought together government stakeholders, law enforcement, industry leaders, and other key players who can put practical measures in place,” Thulo explained in an interview with Radio Islam International.

While government policies and enforcement play a crucial role in road safety, Thulo stressed that individual responsibility is equally vital. “It starts with us making responsible choices—choosing not to drink and drive, designating a sober driver, or opting for e-hailing services. Even as hosts, we have a duty not to let intoxicated guests drive home. Every decision we make can either contribute to or prevent road fatalities.”

The discussion also highlighted the role of businesses, particularly in the transport sector, in ensuring road safety. Thulo urged companies to implement driver training programs, promote responsible alcohol consumption, and support employees through education and awareness initiatives. “It is the duty of business owners to manage their drivers’ health and the safety of their vehicles,” he said.

Despite years of awareness campaigns such as Arrive Alive, South Africa still faces shocking levels of drunk driving incidents. However, Thulo pointed out that the failure does not lie solely with the campaigns but in the lack of comprehensive execution. “It’s not just about creating awareness; we need law enforcement, rehabilitation programs, and technology-driven solutions working together. That’s where real change happens.”

One example of progress is the introduction of e-bet machines, which provide instant, court-admissible alcohol testing, streamlining enforcement efforts. Aware.org has also strengthened collaborations with the JMPD and RTMC to enhance law enforcement visibility and conduct more roadside alcohol tests.

As the Easter weekend approaches, the collective message remains clear: reducing road fatalities requires a united effort from government, businesses, and individuals. “Zero fatalities and zero injuries are achievable if we all take responsibility,” concluded Thulo.

Listen to the full interview on The Daily Round-Up with Moulana Junaid Kharsany and The CEO of Aware.org, Mokebe Thulo here.

Neelam Rahim | neelam@radioislam.co.za 3-minute read 01 April 2025 | 19:45 CAT With South Africa consistently ranking among the highest in global road fatalities, urgent interventions are needed to curb alcohol-related accidents.
