Challenges posed by unpredictable Trump administration<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this week\u2019s ASRI Report<\/a> on Radio Islam International, ASRI\u2019s senior research associate Dr Imraan Buccus discussed the challenges posed by the unpredictability of the Trump administration and its implications for South Africa. Dr Buccus emphasised the need for clear political thinking and strategic planning in navigating this complex international landscape.<\/p>\n

Dr Buccus noted that the unpredictability of Trump\u2019s administration poses a serious threat to South Africa and requires an assessment of the unequal global power balances.<\/p>\n

Buccus noted that while some view the US empire as being in long-term decline, it remains a formidable economic and military power with significant media influence that extends to South Africa.<\/p>\n

He contrasted this with South Africa’s current political divisions and economic fragility, stating, “Our case at the ICJ has helped with restoring some of our international credibility, but many people still think of South Africa in terms of the nine wasted years of the Zuma era.” He added, \u201cIn global terms, we are weak and they are strong, and that requires that we think very strategically about this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Addressing South Africa’s immediate tasks, Dr Buccus advised against unnecessary escalation in relations with the US. He advocated for standing firm on positions regarding Palestine and land reform while asserting sovereignty in a calm and principled manner. He cautioned against provocative actions that might trigger retaliation, highlighting the need to end populist posturing from figures like Gwede Mantashe and Fikile Mbalula. Dr Buccus described such performances as earning headlines but doing little for the national interest, adding, “I think the populist take really places South Africa at risk.”<\/p>\n

When discussing Julius Malema’s role, Dr Buccus acknowledged Malema’s principled stance on issues like Palestine and land reform but criticised his inflammatory conduct. He warned that such behaviour on the international stage could be dangerous and serve as a gift to figures like Elon Musk and Donald Trump. Dr Buccus labelled Malema’s actions as opportunistic, reckless, and grandstanding, asserting that they need to end as they do not help South Africa’s relationship with the US.<\/p>\n

Dr Buccus also highlighted the need for an urgent national priority in South Africa’s communication strategy. He pointed out the dangers of disinformation, particularly regarding land reform, and stressed the importance of providing a measured account of its meaning and significance. Dr Buccus emphasised building stronger relationships with Europe and rational voices within the US, as well as deepening ties with the Global South to reduce exposure to a hostile US.<\/p>\n

Critiquing the ANC, he acknowledged the party’s historical credibility but noted the need to restore its legitimacy. He cited issues such as unreliable electricity and water supply, corruption, high food prices, and unemployment as factors that impact the ANC’s credibility and strategic positioning internationally. Dr Buccus concluded that practical steps at the local government level are essential for the ANC to regain support and effectively represent South Africa on the international stage.<\/p>\n
