Section27 has once again demonstrated its commitment to advancing learners’ rights, following a landmark development involving a learner who fell pregnant after being assaulted by an educator.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Radio Islam International<\/a>, Section27 candidate attorney Fatima Laher confirmed that the organisation successfully represented the learner, ensuring that justice was served.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis case is a painful reminder of the systemic challenges learners, especially young girls, face within the education system,\u201d said Laher.<\/p>\n

The incident highlights broader concerns about learner pregnancy in schools, with Laher explaining that in many instances, the perpetrators are in positions of authority.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis learner fell pregnant after being assaulted by an educator \u2013 a person entrusted with protecting learners. It\u2019s unacceptable, and the school\u2019s failure to act initially worsened the trauma,\u201d Laher added.<\/p>\n

Section27’s intervention resulted in the perpetrator being held accountable, setting a critical precedent for similar cases in future.<\/p>\n

The case also reignites debate on the role of schools in safeguarding learners. Laher emphasised that schools are obligated to provide support mechanisms for pregnant learners and survivors of abuse.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must not lose sight of the right to education. Learners who fall pregnant \u2014 whether by choice or through assault \u2014 have the right to continue with their schooling without stigma or discrimination,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The organisation called for stronger reporting mechanisms and protective policies within schools. \u201cSchools must create safe environments where learners can report abuse without fear of reprisal. Educators should be role models, not perpetrators,\u201d urged Laher.<\/p>\n

As learner pregnancy rates in South Africa remain a cause for concern, this case brings into sharp focus the urgent need for policy implementation, accountability, and comprehensive support systems.<\/p>\n

The victory for the learner is not just a personal triumph but a step towards justice for many others facing similar circumstances.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is why Section27 exists \u2014 to ensure that the constitutional rights of all learners are protected and enforced,\u201d concluded Laher.<\/p>\n
