US President Donald Trump has declared \u201ccomplete control\u201d over Iranian airspace, demanded Iran\u2019s \u201cunconditional surrender,\u201d and urged the evacuation of Tehran\u2014moves widely criticised for inflaming, rather than calming, a volatile Israel\u2013Iran crisis.<\/p>\n
At the G7 summit, while G7 leaders were urging restraint and pushing for a ceasefire, Trump\u2019s hardline declarations marked a stark divergence\u2014prompting fears that US alignment with Israel now sidelines diplomatic de\u2011escalation efforts.<\/p>\n
Wits University lecturer Patrick Kadima labelled Trump\u2019s statements \u201creckless,\u201d warning that they risk fueling a regional conflagration rather than containing it.<\/p>\n
\u201cSuch remarks undermine global efforts toward de-escalation and risk intensifying the conflict,\u201d he told Radio Islam International.<\/p>\n
Kadima unpacked Israel\u2019s and Iran\u2019s competing claims of military success, noting it\u2019s too early to draw firm conclusions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is normal conflict rhetoric\u2026given the situation,\u201d he said, but stressed the real danger lies in an unbridled escalation: \u201cthe continuous conflict between these two states will ultimately blow out into a regional conflict, if not de-escalated.\u201d<\/p>\n
He was equally incisive on international law\u2019s imbalance: \u201cWhy is it that certain countries feel that they can be above the \u2026 international law system and act unilaterally without having any consequences?\u201d With Israel enjoying nuclear capability while Iran remains under treaty constraints, Kadima cautioned, \u201cThese are truly the double standards in international law.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kadima further expressed concern over Trump\u2019s domestic politics dictating foreign policy. He noted that the American public shows little appetite for war, and self-styled anti-war Republicans are at odds with Trump\u2019s hawkish stance.<\/p>\n
\u201cOrdinary American folks\u2026do not want to get involved.\u201d Still, he warned, \u201cWhat matters is what Trump and his advisors think is the best way to move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, humanitarian alarm bells are ringing. The Times and AP report Israeli strikes have targeted Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities and state broadcasters, while Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israeli cities. Hundreds of civilians have been killed, energy markets have wobbled, and cyberattacks are undermining financial infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Kadima was clear, \u201cWe do not need another human catastrophe happening\u2026to recover from that will take many, many years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
