Zohran Mamdani has clinched a historic victory in the New York City mayoral Democratic primary, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a stunning upset that positions him to become the city\u2019s first Muslim and Indian American mayor.<\/p>\n

The victory is not only a personal milestone for Mamdani but also a significant political moment for the city.<\/p>\n

“It does seem as if there’s a surprise,” said political analyst Ibrahim Deen during this week\u2019s Media Lens<\/a><\/em> on Sabaahul Muslim<\/em>. “Mamdani is very different. He’s in the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez brand of democratic politicians, as opposed to the mainstream of the party.”<\/p>\n

Deen explained that while the primary race is not the final election, in a predominantly Democratic city like New York, the winner of the Democratic primary is almost certain to become the next mayor. Mamdani\u2019s campaign, which focused on social democratic policies such as free bus rides and city-owned stores, gained traction among voters eager for change.<\/p>\n

The media\u2019s coverage of the race has drawn criticism.<\/p>\n

“When you look at the media coverage, you can actually see the bias inherent in the media itself,” Deen noted.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that Mamdani\u2019s economic policies were frequently dismissed as unrealistic, while Cuomo\u2019s controversial past, including sexual harassment allegations, was largely ignored. The New York Times<\/em> notably refused to endorse either candidate.<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s background also became a focal point in the race.<\/p>\n

“The fact that Mamdani’s heritage and foreign policy stances have been questioned, even though it’s a mayoral race, shows the underlying bias,” Deen said.<\/p>\n

Despite having no foreign policy authority as mayor, Mamdani\u2019s views on Palestine and Israel were scrutinised by the media, partly due to his Indian Muslim identity.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Deen pointed out that Cuomo may still attempt a comeback in the general mayoral race, potentially drawing support from Republican voters. However, Mamdani\u2019s victory is a clear indication that public sentiment, especially at the local level, is shifting towards candidates who advocate for more equitable economic policies.<\/p>\n

“Mamdani\u2019s win shows that candidates running with a more popular and populist view on the Democratic side can actually win,” Deen concluded.<\/p>\n

His victory could pave the way for other progressive voices to rise in American politics, challenging both the party establishment and traditional media narratives.<\/p>\n
