Among the regions repeatedly mentioned in his sayings is Shaam \u2014 an ancient and blessed land comprising modern-day Syria, Palestine, Jordan, and parts of Lebanon. The reverence he \ufdfa expressed for Shaam makes it a region not only of historical importance but of enduring spiritual relevance.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s explore how the Prophet \ufdfa described Shaam, and what those words mean for us today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Land of Barakah (Blessing)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Prophet \ufdfa once said:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064e \u0628\u064e\u0627\u0631\u0650\u0643\u0652 \u0644\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0627 \u0641\u0650\u064a \u0645\u064e\u062f\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064e\u062a\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0627\u060c \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064e \u0628\u064e\u0627\u0631\u0650\u0643\u0652 \u0644\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0627 \u0641\u0650\u064a \u0645\u064e\u0643\u0651\u064e\u062a\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0627\u060c \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064e \u0628\u064e\u0627\u0631\u0650\u0643\u0652 \u0644\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0627 \u0641\u0650\u064a \u0634\u064e\u0627\u0645\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0627<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cO Allah, bless us in our Madinah, bless us in our Makkah, bless us in our Shaam.\u201d (Tirmidhi)<\/p>\n<p>This powerful du\u2018a illustrates that barakah is not limited to the Haramain (Makkah and Madinah) \u2014 it also rests in Shaam. Barakah in Islamic terms refers to growth, goodness, divine favour, and spiritual light. The very soil of Shaam, according to the Prophet \ufdfa, is infused with this sacred blessing.<\/p>\n<p>Even the Qur\u2019an speaks of this land with honour:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0648\u064e\u0646\u064e\u062c\u0651\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0646\u064e\u0627\u0647\u064f \u0648\u064e\u0644\u064f\u0648\u0637\u064b\u0627 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0623\u064e\u0631\u0652\u0636\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0651\u064e\u062a\u0650\u064a \u0628\u064e\u0627\u0631\u064e\u0643\u0652\u0646\u064e\u0627 \u0641\u0650\u064a\u0647\u064e\u0627 \u0644\u0650\u0644\u0652\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0645\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064e<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd We delivered him [Ibrahim] and Lut to the land which We had blessed for the worlds.\u201d (Al-Anbiya, 21: 71)<\/p>\n<p>Classical commentators agree \u2014 that blessed land was Shaam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shaam \u2014 The Fort of the Believers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In times of fitnah (tribulation), the Prophet \ufdfa encouraged the Ummah to look toward Shaam as a spiritual refuge:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0625\u0650\u0630\u064e\u0627 \u0641\u064e\u0633\u064e\u062f\u064e \u0623\u064e\u0647\u0652\u0644\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0651\u064e\u0627\u0645\u0650 \u0641\u064e\u0644\u0627\u064e \u062e\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0631\u064e \u0641\u0650\u064a\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0644\u0627\u064e \u062a\u064e\u0632\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064f \u0637\u064e\u0627\u0626\u0650\u0641\u064e\u0629\u064c \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u0623\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064e\u062a\u0650\u064a \u0645\u064e\u0646\u0652\u0635\u064f\u0648\u0631\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064e \u0644\u0627\u064e \u064a\u064e\u0636\u064f\u0631\u0651\u064f\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0645\u064e\u0646\u0652 \u062e\u064e\u0630\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u062d\u064e\u062a\u0651\u064e\u0649 \u062a\u064e\u0642\u064f\u0648\u0645\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0651\u064e\u0627\u0639\u064e\u0629\u064f<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the people of Shaam become corrupt, there is no good in you. There will always be a group from my Ummah who remain upon the truth and are supported, those who oppose them will not harm them \u2014 until the Hour is established.\u201d (Tirmidhi 2192)<\/p>\n<p>This hadith not only affirms that Shaam will always have a group of righteous believers \u2014 but warns us that the spiritual health of Shaam is linked to the spiritual health of the entire Ummah.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t just geography. It\u2019s a gauge of faith.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Stronghold of Islam in the End Times<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Prophet \ufdfa foretold that major events of the end times would centre around Shaam. He said:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0623\u064e\u0644\u0627 \u0625\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0639\u064f\u0642\u0652\u0631\u064e \u062f\u064e\u0627\u0631\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064f\u0624\u0652\u0645\u0650\u0646\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0651\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064f<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe heartland of the believers at the time of tribulation will be in Shaam.\u201d (Ahmed, Tabarani)<\/p>\n<p>In another narration, the Prophet \ufdfa mentioned that the Imam Mahdi will appear from Madinah and travel to Shaam, and that \u2018Isa (AS) will descend at the white minaret in Damascus to slay the Dajjal (antichrist):<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u064a\u064e\u0646\u0652\u0632\u0650\u0644\u064f \u0639\u0650\u064a\u0633\u064e\u0649 \u0627\u0628\u0652\u0646\u064f \u0645\u064e\u0631\u0652\u064a\u064e\u0645\u064e \u0639\u0650\u0646\u0652\u062f\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0627\u0631\u064e\u0629\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0628\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0636\u064e\u0627\u0621\u0650 \u0634\u064e\u0631\u0652\u0642\u0650\u064a\u0651\u064e \u062f\u0650\u0645\u064e\u0634\u0652\u0642\u064e<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe (\u2018Isa) will descend at the white minaret to the east of Damascus\u2026\u201d (Sahih Muslim)<\/p>\n<p>These narrations don\u2019t only point to future events \u2014 they elevate Shaam as the final frontier of faith, where the last chapters of human history will unfold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Place Where the Religion Was Strengthened<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shaam was not just praised in theory \u2014 the early Muslims built its reality. During the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), and under the leadership of the Sahabah like Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, Mu&#8217;adh ibn Jabal, and Khalid ibn Walid RA, Shaam became one of the most spiritually and politically powerful regions of the Muslim world.<\/p>\n<p>It became the base of the Umayyad Caliphate, a centre of Islamic scholarship, Qur\u2019anic preservation, and Hadith transmission. The words of the Prophet \ufdfa came to life through the actions of his companions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Land Worth Praying For<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most important lesson in the Prophet\u2019s \ufdfa statements about Shaam is how often he prayed for it. When the people asked him to make du\u2018a for Najd (another region), he repeatedly said:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064e \u0628\u064e\u0627\u0631\u0650\u0643\u0652 \u0644\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0627 \u0641\u0650\u064a \u0634\u064e\u0627\u0645\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0627\u060c \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064e \u0628\u064e\u0627\u0631\u0650\u0643\u0652 \u0644\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0627 \u0641\u0650\u064a \u064a\u064e\u0645\u064e\u0646\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0627<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cO Allah, bless us in our Shaam, O Allah, bless us in our Yemen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The people said, \u201cAnd in our Najd, O Messenger of Allah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He replied:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652\u0647\u064e\u0627 \u064a\u064e\u0637\u0652\u0644\u064f\u0639\u064f \u0642\u064e\u0631\u0652\u0646\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0651\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0637\u064e\u0627\u0646\u0650\u060c \u0648\u064e\u0628\u0650\u0647\u064e\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0632\u0651\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0627\u0632\u0650\u0644\u064f \u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0652\u0641\u0650\u062a\u064e\u0646\u064f<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom there will emerge the horn of Shaytan, and with it the earthquakes and tribulations.\u201d (Bukhari)<\/p>\n<p>This shows the special spiritual rank of Shaam in the Prophet\u2019s \ufdfa sight. His repeated prayers serve as a reminder for us \u2014 to pray for Shaam, especially in our times, when it is ravaged by war, occupation, and suffering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Final Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The words of the Prophet \ufdfa are eternal. And his words about Shaam remind us that some lands are not just coordinates on a map \u2014 they are living symbols of our faith, our history, and our future.<\/p>\n<p>As we begin this new Islamic year, may we reconnect with the significance of Shaam in our hearts and actions.
