Many everyday ingredients can double as home cures for a host of complaints, from toothache to sciatica – and with no worry of side-effects.

URINARY INFECTIONS
To relieve the pain of a urinary tract infection, such as cystitis, mix half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in an 8oz glass of water and drink This changes the pH level of the acidic urine so that it will burn less when passing water. Do this once or twice a day at the first sign of infection.

Drinking a glass of homemade cranberry juice twice a day can also help. Cranberry juice contains chemicals which inhibit the activity of E. coli – the bacteria most often responsible for cystitis. To make the juice, boil fresh or frozen cranberries until soft, liquidise when cool and drink a standard glass. This way you know you are getting the benefit of pure fresh fruit, unlike with a commercial drink which may be diluted and contain added sugar.

ATHLETE'S FOOT
Take a clove of raw garlic and apply to the affected area. Active chemical compounds known as ajoenes in the garlic act as potent antifungals and may stop the growth of a range of common fungal infections, including thrush and athlete's foot.

A paste of bicarbonate of soda and water can also help prevent athlete's foot.

WARTS
soak an infected hand or foot in diluted vinegar to get rid of unsightly warts, "The acid in vinegar will destroy the viral particles in the wart,” Soak for at least 15 minutes every day and repeat until warts clear.

MOUTH ULCERS
Camomile tea can help soothe the pain of mouth ulcers, Allow the herbal brew to cool with the tea bag in, then swill liquid around the mouth before swallowing. Do this every couple of hours. It is thought the herb contains substances that relieve inflammation.

COLD & FLU SYMPTOMS
Relieve a stuffy nose, ear infection or congestion on the chest by eating something spicy such as a hot curry dish this makes the nose and eyes run, loosening the mucus.

Garlic, which is often used in Indian food, helps break down mucus and is antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and an antioxidant so will help fight infection and boost the immune system.

FOOT CORNS.

Tie a fresh slice of lemon over the corn and keep it on all night.

Massage castor oil on the corns every morning and night before sleeping. Massage for 2-3 minutes so that the oil gets absorbed. In 3-4 weeks the corns will disappear.

OLIVE OIL

A few drops of olive oil gently lubricates both the skin and the wax so that after a few applications any wax build-up should slide out of its own accord. More stubborn wax may need to be extracted by a doctor, but it's always worth softening it first with a few drops of olive oil. Plus, it's painless and a lot cheaper than over-the-counter ear wax solutions, which are usually oil-based anyway.

TURMERIC/ARAD

Makes an excellent arthritis tea! Strong anti-inflammatory, blood purifier, hepatitis, inflammatory bowel diseases, bruises, colic, ulcers, haemorrhages, yeast infections, antiseptic. It can be used internally and externally to heal wounds, relieve pains in the limbs, break up congestion and as a restorative after the loss of blood from childbirth.

Turmeric Arthritis Tea Recipe: 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric, 3 cardamom pods (optional), 1/4 cup water. Simmer 5 to 7 minutes, then add 1 cup of milk, 2 tablespoons almond oil (cold pressed). Bring just to the boiling point (but do not boil). Add honey to taste. Sip slowly as a hot tea.

Turmeric's key ingredient Cur cumin is known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, Turmeric powder can help in healing cuts, wounds, and other skin infections including boils.

Heat one cup of Flax Seed Oil in a small saucepan on the stove.
Thinly slice a small onion and add it to the hot oil.
Fry the onions until they are dark brown and crunchy.
Remove the brown onions and mix 2 tablespoons of Turmeric powder into the oil.
Turn off the stove and let the oil cool down to a temperature that is comfortable to touch.
Using a cotton swab, apply a small amount of the oil onto the injured or infected skin area.
Apply this three times per day until the wound or infection is cured.
Save the remaining oil into an airtight container for future use.
For internal injuries, fractures, sprains, and herniated disks, dip a piece of unbleached cotton fabric into the warm Turmeric oil. The fabric or cotton pad should be large enough to cover the outer skin of the affected area. Secure it in place and leave this cotton pad on overnight.

You can also add one teaspoon of turmeric powder into a warm glass of milk and drink it before going to bed to prevent internal inflammation and infections.

Ginger

Nausea, inflammation, muscle pain

Even in the tiniest doses, ginger is one of the most powerful kitchen cupboard remedies as it's been scientifically proven to treat sickness and nausea. A 2009 study of pregnant women found that those who took ginger in the early stages of their pregnancy were less likely to suffer from morning sickness than those who didn't. Studies have also found that it helps alleviate the nausea experienced by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Ginger is also an anti-inflammatory and can help relieve pain and reduce inflammation associated with arthritis, rheumatism and muscle spasms.

—
Ammarah
Radio Islam
+27118547022
ammarah@radioislam.co.za
www.radioislam.co.za

Most of us keep the bathroom cabinet stocked with remedies for common ailments – but we could just as well look in our kitchen cupboards instead.
