Wayne Duvenhage of Organising, Undoing Tax Abuse, OUTA, unpacked Pres Ramaphosa\u2019s decision to establish a commission of inquiry into Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi\u2019s explosive claims about corruption at the top of the South African Police Services.<\/p>\n
The commission is the judicial \u201croute to go\u201d says Wayne, but with public trust at an all-time low and commissions having \u201cno action that follows them,\u201d is this just another unending quest for justice? Duvenhage advocates for the NPA to run parallel with the commission to get the facts and start acting against people in positions of power, to implicate and charge them for their wrongdoing.<\/p>\n
President Ramaphosa has made it clear that they are not going to wait as long with this commission as they did with the Zondo commission. Firoz Cachalia of the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council has been chosen by the President as the new Police Commissioner. The council has been trying to push the anti-corruption agenda forward and sign it off with Ramaphosa. According to Duvenhage, Cachalia is an honest person, au-fait with the law, but whether he has \u201cthe ability to lead and drive and really reform those required within the policing structures and the system\u201d remains to be seen.<\/p>\n
In the meanwhile, what happens if the evidence goes missing? Duvenhage says that \u201cin today\u2019s world with digital fingerprints all over the place,\u201d it is extremely difficult to lose information, especially if it is \u201cdownloaded and saved and documented.\u201d Missing information usually resurfaces, and the truth will eventually prevail, even if it takes time.<\/p>\n
