A chilling warning has been issued by veteran war correspondent Faizal Dawjee, who draws unsettling parallels between the 1995 Srebrenica massacre and the ongoing atrocities in Gaza. In his op-ed Two Graves, One Silence<\/em>, Dawjee reflects on his firsthand experience during the Bosnian war, using it as a lens to examine what he calls a \u201clive-streamed genocide\u201d unfolding in Palestine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI witnessed the horror of Srebrenica, the inhumanity, the trauma,\u201d says Dawjee. \u201cWhat is happening in Gaza today is no different, except this time, it\u2019s televised in real-time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dawjee commemorated the nearly 8,300 Muslim men and boys murdered in Srebrenica, only to contrast it with the silence that now surrounds the killing of Palestinians. \u201cThe genocide in Gaza isn\u2019t just about bombs or starvation. It\u2019s systemic a deliberate eradication through multiple coordinated actions,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

He coined the term passive genocide<\/em>, accusing world leaders particularly in Europe of complicity through silence. \u201cWhen you refuse to condemn, when you parrot lines like \u2018Israel has the right to defend itself\u2019 while watching thousands die that is passive genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n

The journalist didn\u2019t mince words on Western geopolitical interests. He described Israel as a \u201csatellite military base\u201d for global powers with vested stakes. \u201cThis isn\u2019t a conflict it\u2019s a genocide rooted in the Zionist project to eliminate Palestinians,\u201d he asserted, linking it to patterns seen in Bosnia, Rwanda, and beyond.<\/p>\n

His message to global citizens was clear: do not rely on governments. \u201cCivic solidarity is our power,\u201d Dawjee stressed. \u201cWe must move beyond remembrance beyond symbolic acts. Real justice means dragging perpetrators to The Hague, calling for boycotts, and closing down industries that profit from this genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dawjee praised South Africa\u2019s efforts at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and urged ordinary citizens to build grassroots alliances across the Global South. \u201cJustice isn\u2019t abstract. It\u2019s the pursuit of accountability. And it starts with our voices, our actions.\u201d<\/p>\n
