Friendships change in nature and importance as we grow. In childhood, friendships are based on play and proximity, helping children learn basic social skills. In adolescence, friendships become more emotionally intense and play a key role in shaping identity and providing support.<\/em><\/p>\n

During early adulthood, friendships are built around shared life experiences like university or work and often require more effort to maintain. By middle adulthood, people tend to focus on fewer, deeper friendships, prioritizing quality over quantity.<\/em><\/p>\n

In older age, friendships become vital for emotional support and mental well-being, especially as social circles shrink due to retirement or loss. <\/em><\/p>\n

12 Levels of Friendship<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yesterday having discussed the different stages of friendship and how it evolves through the different stages of our lives, today we thought we will look at the different levels of Friendship and uniquely, the Arabic language has a word for each one of them.<\/p>\n

Did you know that in Arabic, there are 12 levels of friendship? For every level of friendship, there is an Arabic word to describe it. From Sadeeq to Khaleel, it is rare to find all 12 levels of friendship in one person.<\/p>\n

Here are the 12 levels of friendship in Arabic\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

1\/ \ud835\ude4e\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude59\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude66 (\u0635\u062f\u064a\u0642) – a true friend; someone who doesn’t befriend you for an ulterior motive. The word “Sadeeq” is commonly translated as truth, so honesty and loyalty is at the core of this friendship.<\/p>\n

2\/ \ud835\ude3c\ud835\ude63\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude68 (\u0623\u0646\u064a\u0633) – someone with whom you’re really comfortable and familiar with, a comforting companion, someone who brings peace and joy through their presence.<\/p>\n

3\/ \ud835\ude55\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude62\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude61 (\u0632\u0645\u064a\u0644) – someone you have a nodding acquaintance with. Or it could even mean a person you work or study with. Often used in professional or educational contexts without necessarily implying emotional closeness.<\/p>\n

4\/ \ud835\ude45\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude61\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude68 (\u062c\u0644\u064a\u0633) – someone you’re comfortable sitting with for a period of time.<\/p>\n

5\/ \ud835\ude4e\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude62\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude67 (\u0633\u0645\u064a\u0631) – you have good conversation with them.<\/p>\n

6\/ \ud835\ude4e\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude5d\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude57 (\u0635\u0627\u062d\u0628) – someone who’s concerned for your well-being. A versatile word meaning companion or buddy; used commonly in everyday speech. Can range from close friendship to someone you spend a lot of time with.<\/p>\n

7\/ \ud835\ude4d\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude5b\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude66 (\u0631\u0641\u064a\u0642) – someone you can depend upon. A closer level of friendship; often used for someone who accompanies you regularly in life or purpose.<\/p>\n

8\/ \ud835\ude46\ud835\ude5d\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude61\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude61 (\u062e\u0644\u064a\u0644) – an intimate friend; someone whose presence makes you happy. It is said to be the highest, most intimate form of friendship. Deep love, loyalty, and understanding are implied. This word appears in religious texts (e.g., Ibr\u0101h\u012bm \u02bfalayhi as-sal\u0101m is referred to as Khal\u012blull\u0101h \u2013 the close friend of Allah).<\/p>\n

9\/ \ud835\ude49\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude5f\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude6e\ud835\ude6e (\u0646\u062c\u064a) – a confidant; someone you trust deeply.<\/p>\n

10\/ \ud835\ude49\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude59\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude62 (\u0646\u062f\u064a\u0645) – a drinking companion (just tea) that you might call when you’re free.<\/p>\n

11\/ \ud835\ude4e\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude5b\ud835\ude5e\ud835\ude6e\ud835\ude6e (\u0635\u0641\u064a) – your best friend; someone you’ve chosen over other friends.<\/p>\n

12\/ \ud835\ude4c\ud835\ude56\ud835\ude67\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude5a\ud835\ude63 (\u0642\u0631\u064a\u0646) – someone who’s inseparable from you; you know how they think (and vice versa).<\/p>\n
