Known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse ecological land and seascapes, the vibrant country of Malaysia in South Asia boasts unmatchable hospitality extended by its friendly people. Despite its distance from South Africa, and requiring at least two flights to get there, Malaysia promises to weave a “tapestry of experiences” for its visitors.

Ikhmil Fawedh, a Malaysian residing in the Kuala Lampur state with a Johor bloodline, is a professional swimmer and runs his own business, and says that South African citizens visiting Malaysia do not require a visa to visit his country. Although the weather is beautifully warm throughout the year, the perfect time to visit would be the dry season from June to August as Malaysia displays clear skies and sunny days during this period, making it ideal for outdoor activities.

Depending on a person’s preferences, Malaysia offers a plethora of attractions and sites to see. From the iconic Petronas Towers in the city of Kuala Lampur to the historical wonders of Malaka in Penang, and the lush greenery of the Cameron Islands, to the “captivating biodiversity” of the Borneo Rainforest, there is something for all ages and temperaments. “Pristine shores and crystal-clear waters” abound on the islands of Penang and Langkawi, which are the also most popular with tourists. According to Ikhmil, some of the most beautiful beaches that are often overlooked by tourists can be found in his picturesque hometown of Johor, the Southern gateway to Malaysia. Beaches here offer powdery white sand, vibrant coral reefs for snorkelling and diving, and for adventure seekers, there are a variety of water sports like jet-skiing, banana-boat rides and parasailing.

Malaysia’s ‘top notch’ public transport system comprises of buses, trains and the taxis that make it easy for tourists to get around. With a mostly Muslim population, there is an abundance of masaajid, and a variety of halal fusion foods from different cultures are easily available. Fawedh, shared some of the more popular local cuisine that one can indulge in that includes roti canai, laksa, satays, rendang, nasi goreng, and flavourful noodle dishes.

Malaysia, a country rich in natural beauty, is a country that should be on every visitors bucket list.
