In the latest Africa report with Thembisa Fakude, Senior Research Fellow at Africa-Asia Dialogues, several critical regional developments were discussed, shedding light on ongoing challenges and potential opportunities.

One of the significant topics of discussion was the joint efforts of Saudi Arabia and the United States to end the war in Sudan. Historically, the two nations have managed to achieve certain ceasefires in the past, including one between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese armed forces. However, the recent discovery of 87 bodies in a mass grave in Darfur and the bombing of civilians in a town near Omdurman have led to a deteriorating situation.

Fakude emphasised the importance of achieving a longer-lasting ceasefire this time around. For meaningful progress towards peace, it is essential to address the financial support provided to armed factions. While the Sudanese armed forces are internationally recognised as the government of Sudan, the RSF (Rapid Support Forces) lacks the same recognition. Stopping financial backing from external parties, such as the United Arab Emirates supporting the RSF and Saudi Arabia supporting Abdul Fattah Burhan, leader of the Sudanese armed forces, may play a pivotal role in paving the way for constructive negotiations and lasting peace in Sudan.

Another crucial topic covered in the report was the comprehensive partnership between the European Union (EU) and Tunisia. The partnership primarily focuses on halting illegal immigration across the Mediterranean into Europe. High-level officials, Ursula von der Leyen, and Marc Rother, the prime minister of the Netherlands, visited Tunisia to discuss the issue and explore ways to combat human trafficking. However, this partnership comes at a time when Tunisia faces concerns regarding the suppression of human rights and the opposition’s limited functioning.

Regarding Zimbabwe, the report highlighted recent changes in laws that could potentially hinder a free and fair election. New laws related to patriotism impose restrictions on freedom of movement and speech, leading to fears of suppressing dissent and criticism of the government. The report also shed light on the visits of high-profile figures to Zimbabwe, such as boxer Floyd Mayweather and Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi, both seeking to bolster support for President MSN in Nagagwa. These engagements raise questions about the impact on Zimbabwe’s relations with Western partners, as Zimbabwe needs friends and economic support during challenging times.

The Africa report touched upon critical issues affecting the continent, ranging from the pursuit of peace in Sudan to challenges surrounding migration and political developments in Tunisia and Zimbabwe. The dynamics of regional engagements, financial support to armed factions, and efforts to strengthen international ties were presented as key factors influencing Africa’s current and future landscape. As the region continues to face various challenges, it remains essential for stakeholders to work collectively towards sustainable solutions and progress for the betterment of Africa and its people.
