All about the benefits for almond/badam

ALMONDS ARE Part of the plum family, the almond tree is native to North Africa, West Asia and the Mediterranean.  Almonds are technically the seed of the fruit of the almond tree, with stone like seeds (or pits) within. The seed of the almond fruit is what we refer to as the almond nut. The Romans called it “Greek nut” since they were first cultivated in Greece. The English word almond is derived from the French word ‘amande’, which in turn is derived of the Latin word ‘amygdalus’, which literally means ‘tonsil plum.’ They are called ‘badaam’ in Indian languages.
For centuries, mothers and grandmothers  trusted almonds for their children. They used to give them 4 or 5 almonds with a glass of milk because they believed in the almond’s brain boosting benefits for children and young adults. According to Ayurveda, almonds are considered a nutrient for the nervous system. They are said to induce high intellectual level and longevity. Now scientific study has proven the benefits of almonds for the brain. We must thank our grandmothers who knew about this miracle nut all along.

High-protein almonds are ideal for sating the appetite in a healthy way. They are rich in monounsaturated fats; much research now links this type of fat with a reduced risk of heart disease. These nuts are one of the richest sources of vitamin E, which seems to protect against UV light damage and Alzheimer’s disease. By munching away on almonds you can top up on important minerals: manganese, which helps the body form strong bones and regulates blood sugar; and magnesium, which is essential for organ, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and regulating blood pressure.

Almonds make a great snack because they are a good source of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. These nutrients are essential for keeping your bones and teeth healthy and strong. Just 1 ounceof nuts contains 8 percent of your daily intake of potassium, 20 percent of the recommended daily intake of magnesium and 14 percent of the phosphorus you need. A deficiency of these nutrients can cause osteoporosis, while an adequate intake prevents this degenerative bone disease. Magnesium is especially important for bone health because it helps to regulate the levels of calcium and vitamin D.
