With the holiday season in full swing, South African roads are set to see thousands of travellers journeying to destinations across the country. From the scenic Eastern Cape to bustling coastal cities, the transport and tourism departments have launched critical safety initiatives to ensure safe travels during this busy time.
Speaking to Radio Islam International during the launch of the annual Arrive Alive campaign, Tasneem Carrim, spokesperson for the Department of Tourism, emphasized the importance of road safety and vigilance. “This time of year, brings an increase in travel, and with it, the need for heightened awareness,” Carrim noted. “We are working alongside transport authorities and traffic police to promote safe driving while also offering tips to help the public avoid scams and stay healthy.”
The tourism department’s complementary Summer Campaign highlights South Africa’s sunny beaches, diverse wildlife, and cultural hotspots. However, Carrim urged travellers to remain vigilant against fraudsters. “If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is,” she warned, advising individuals to verify travel agency credentials and avoid sharing sensitive financial details.
Common red flags include unclear website images, lack of a physical address, and high-pressure payment tactics. Carrim highlighted ongoing scams involving fake accommodation listings and holiday packages. “We urge victims to report incidents to the tourism complaints office or the Consumer Commission. Preventative measures are crucial, but mechanisms are in place to assist affected individuals,” she said.
Health and personal safety also remain a priority. The department recommends staying hydrated during heat waves, wearing sunscreen, and observing food safety practices. Detailed guidelines on foodborne illnesses and their prevention are available on the tourism website.
As incidents like riptides and heat-related emergencies rise, Carrim said, “Enjoy your holiday, but always stay cautious.”
Through collaborative efforts, South African authorities hope to foster a safer, more enjoyable festive season for all.
