A 26-year-old Michigan man in the US has been arrested after his Apple Watch revealed he was lying about being a victim of an anti-Semitic attack.
According to Cult of Mac, Sean Sammit claims he was attacked outside the synagogue where he works, but the heart rate monitor on his Apple Watch told a different story.
Investigators combed through surveillance video but were unable to find any evidence of any attack and Sammit’s story could not be corroborated by any potential witnesses.
Authorities soon became suspicious, and asked to examine Sammit’s Apple Watch in order to analyze his Health Data.
An Apple Watch continuously records the wearer’s heart rate as long as it’s on their wrist.
Police say they used this data to help show Sammit faked being attacked. It showed his heart rate did not spike at any time around 7pm – the time he claimed the attack occurred.
According to The Jewish News Sammit then changed his story to claim he’d lost consciousness while doing dishes and accidentally stabbed himself, but his Apple Watch heart monitor didn’t indicate a loss of consciousness.
Sammit finally admitted he’d faked the whole thing in an attempt to get out of his work contract with the synagogue.
He’s been charged with filing a false police report, and resigned from his job.
