Renewal of the Heart and Soul
Phase 4 – Strengthening The Heart: Building a Heart That Lasts
Being a Mercy to Others
My dear brothers and sisters, through the week we have spoken about patience, gratitude, trust, consistency, and good character. We have seen how the heart shapes behaviour and how purification of the heart leads to beautiful actions.
Now we arrive at the destination of it all. The quality that summarizes every other quality. The characteristic that Allah used to describe His Final Prophet ﷺ. That quality is mercy.
The Prophet ﷺ as Mercy
Allah ﷻ described His Messenger ﷺ in the most comprehensive way:
“وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ”
“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.” (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21: 107)
The Prophet ﷺ was mercy. He was merciful to his Companions RA, merciful to his family, merciful to children, merciful to the poor, merciful even to his enemies.
When the people of Ta’if stoned him until his body bled, the angel of the mountains offered to crush them between two mountains. The Prophet ﷺ refused. He said:
“اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِ قَوْمِي فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ”
“O Allah, guide my people, for they do not know.” (Bukhari)
This is mercy. Wanting good even for those who harm you.
Mercy as a Sign of Faith
The Prophet ﷺ linked mercy directly to faith:
“لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى يُحِبَّ لِأَخِيهِ مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِهِ”
“None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
True faith produces mercy. It makes you want good for others. It makes you feel their pain. It makes you reach out to help.
Mercy in Daily Life
Being a mercy to others is not complicated. It is small, daily actions:
- A kind word to someone who is struggling
- A smile to your spouse, your child, your neighbour
- Patience with the one who annoys you
- Forgiveness for the one who wronged you
- Charity to the one in need
- Listening to the one who is hurting
- Defending the one who is absent
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“لَنْ تَسَعُوا النَّاسَ بِأَمْوَالِكُمْ فَلْيَسَعْهُمْ مِنْكُمْ بَسْطُ الْوَجْهِ وَحُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ”
“You cannot encompass people with your wealth, so let your cheerful face and good character encompass them.” (Reported in various collections)
You may not be able to give everyone money. But you can give everyone a smile, a kind word, a gentle response.
The Reward of Mercy
The Prophet ﷺ gave us one of the most hope-filled promises:
“الرَّاحِمُونَ يَرْحَمُهُمُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ، ارْحَمُوا مَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ”
“The merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on earth, and the One in heaven will be merciful to you.” (Tirmidhi)
The mercy you show others is the mercy you will receive from Allah. This is a direct transaction with the Creator.
Leaving Ramadhan as Mercy
As you leave Ramadhan, let mercy be your companion. Let it be the quality that defines you. Let people feel safe with you, comforted by you, loved by you.
The world is harsh enough. Be soft. The world is cruel enough. Be kind. The world is cold enough. Be warm. Be a mercy to everyone you meet.
“فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ كُنتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ الْقَلْبِ لَانفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ”
“So by mercy from Allah, you were gentle with them. And if you had been rude and harsh-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you.” (Surah Ali ‘Imran, 3:159)
Gentleness gathers. Mercy unites. Kindness heals.
Be that for others. And Allah will be that for you.
May Allah make us among the merciful, that we may receive His mercy. Ameen.
