Black Forum SA challenges DA minister over IDT board appointments

Black Forum South Africa has challenged Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, over what it calls an unlawful process in appointing board members to the Independent Development Trust (IDT). The civic organisation has sent a letter of demand to the Minister, warning of imminent legal action if due process is not followed.

Speaking to Radio Islam International, Advocate Kgagudi  Morota, CEO of Black Forum SA, accused Macpherson of bypassing legally mandated procedures in selecting five new board members, four of whom resigned last year under scrutiny. Morota argued that the Minister’s actions undermine the IDT’s leadership, particularly Chairperson Ms Tebogo Malaka, and reflect a broader political agenda.

“Minister Macpherson is a DA Minister, and the way he is conducting himself suggests he wants to erode anyone who holds strategic positions like Ms Malaka, who was appointed by previous Ministers,” said Morota. “This is the same DA that claims it opposes cadre deployment, yet here we are watching them engage in the very practice they criticise.”

Macpherson’s decision to reappoint former board members who previously resigned raises questions about his intentions. Morota pointed out that some of these individuals were also placed in other key positions, such as the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), further solidifying suspicions of political interference.

The broader concern, according to Morota, is that the actions taken at the IDT could set a precedent for other government boards, particularly those led by black professionals. “If this is not effectively managed now, we are likely to see similar moves across other entities,” he warned.

Black Forum SA has given Minister Macpherson until 17:00 today to respond. Failure to do so will see the matter head to court. Morota expressed disappointment in the GNU, stating, “We thought the DA would bring better governance, but it seems we are witnessing an even worse scenario where political power is being used to override the rule of law.”

With legal action looming, the Minister’s response – or lack thereof – will determine the next chapter in this unfolding governance dispute.
