Black Friday Set to Boost SA’s e-Commerce

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 21-11-2017

First National Bank (FNB) says South Africa’s e-Commerce is likely to get a boost on Black Friday and Cyber Monday as South African consumers and retailers prepare for the shopping spree.

Black Friday, 24 November is expected be one of the biggest low-price days in the country and across the world, filled with long queues, crowds of people and its fair share of chaos.

Black Friday is an American phenomenon that has been ushering in the festive season shopping period in the United States since the 1950’s.

CEO of FNB Consumer Dr Christoph Nieuwoudt says consumers will be looking to avoid the long queues associated with such shopping sprees.

“Any savvy shopper can cash-in on the specials without spending time in queues and traffic, trying to move from one destination to another. While e-Commerce is still in its infancy in South Africa compared to global standards, both the consumer and retail sectors are warming up to the use of technology to deliver and acquire goods and service.”

Nieuwoudt says the use of online shopping is a trend that has been gradually gaining momentum locally, pointing to the growing number of customers who are using digital platforms to purchase goods and services.
