Bushiri’s Extradition Process to Begin in March

By Naadiya Adams

Malawi’s Lilongwe Magistrates Court has ordered that the formal hearing of the extradition process for self-proclaimed prophet Shepard Bushiri and his wife Mary is set to begin in March.

Kicking off the extradition process, the Malawian government returned to court seeking a warrant of arrest for the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church leader, the couple have since appeared in court on Wednesday.

In November last year, the couple fled South Africa after being granted R200 000 bail.

Steve Kayuni, Malawi’s director of public prosecution told the court that the State received extradition requests from the South African government.

The hearing is set for March 8th, and in the interim the couple will not be re-arrested the court ruled.

The fugitives face charges of theft, fraud and money laundering. They claim they would not receive a fair trial here in South Africa.
