As August ushers in Women’s Month commemorations, Aware.org highlights the extraordinary women who are the heart and soul of the alcohol industry’s harm reduction programmes. With their unwavering dedication and passion, these women are more than professionals—they are mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends who tirelessly work towards nurturing safer communities and healthier lives.
In a discussion with Radio Islam International, Andrie Vermeulen, the National Coordinator at SANCA and a guiding light in harm reduction at AWARE.org, spoke about her inspiration to pursue a career in harm reduction.
Being the National Coordinator of Prevention & Treatment at SANCA, Vermeulen explains her role, “we ensure that we have programs from women in place specifically looking at women’s month and we also make some aware of some of the harms caused by risky use of alcohol specifically but also of other substances as well.”
Further highlighting the rewarding experience from her role at SANCA, a Social Worker by profession, Vermeulen explained, “That is where my passion comes from and working with people has always been a calling for me.”
“Each story of recovery and responsible living reminds me why I chose this path. It’s about saving lives, preserving families, and building stronger communities,” says Vermeulen. Their work is a beacon of hope for those struggling with alcohol misuse, inspiring them to seek help and make positive changes in their lives.
At the core of every community, these women stand as the pillars of support, often making personal sacrifices to provide education and assistance to those affected by alcohol misuse. Their tireless efforts create environments where every individual feels valued and supported.
