A young girl, whose age is disputed between ER24 and the police, is fighting for her life after she fell from a second-storey balcony onto the windshield of a car parked below. The incident happened at a block of flats in Voortrekker Road in Parow on Thursday afternoon.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said they received a call at about 1.22 p.m. and arrived to find Life Healthcare on the scene. He said the girl had multiple injuries and was in critical condition.

“Medics treated the girl and provided her with advanced life-support interventions before she was transported to Tygerberg Hospital for urgent care,” he said.

He added that the incident’s details were unknown, but local authorities were investigating.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg confirmed that Parow police had investigated the incident. He said the girl was seven years old and was treated at a medical facility.

Meanwhile, Ilitha Labantu spokesperson Siya Monakali expressed concern about the high rate of child abuse and negligence in society. He said his organisation had advocated for women’s and children’s rights for over 34 years.

He cited crime statistics from January to March 2023 that showed more than 245 children were murdered in 90 days, meaning that more than three children were killed daily in South Africa.

He said this highlighted society’s failure to protect children’s rights and dignity.
