Chosen by Allah – Part 7

Ibrahim عليه السلام Echo: Where Footsteps Become Footprints

Chosen by Allah

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) occupies a central place in the Abrahamic traditions and is known in Islam as one of the greatest Prophets AS and the father of monotheism. The Qur’an repeatedly refers to him as “chosen” by Allah for a noble mission and spiritual leadership. His being chosen was not arbitrary; it was the result of deep faith, sincere submission, and a lifelong journey of devotion and obedience to Allah. This selection highlights the extraordinary relationship between Ibrahim (AS) and his Creator.

Divinely Chosen for Leadership

One of the most direct references to Prophet Ibrahim AS’s status is found in Surah Al-Baqarah:

وَإِذِ ٱبْتَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ رَبُّهُۥ بِكَلِمَـٰتٍ فَأَتَمَّهُنَّ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّى جَاعِلُكَ لِلنَّاسِ إِمَامًا ۖ

“And [mention, O Muhammad], when Ibrahim was tried by his Lord with commands and he fulfilled them. [Allah] said, ‘Indeed, I will make you a leader (Imām) for the people.’” Al-Baqarah (2: 124)

This verse illustrates a key point: Ibrahim was tested by Allah, and after he successfully fulfilled those tests, he was chosen as a leader for all of humanity. This leadership was not political or tribal — it was spiritual. Allah recognized in Ibrahim (AS) a man whose heart and actions were aligned in complete submission, a man worthy of guiding others toward the truth.

Chosen Through Trials

Ibrahim’s (AS) life is marked by intense trials, each more difficult than the last. He was tested with:

  • Rejection by his people and family
  • Being thrown into a fire for his beliefs
  • Leaving his wife and infant son in the barren desert of Makkah
  • The command to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (AS)

Each time, Ibrahim AS responded with full trust in Allah. His passing of these trials was the means by which he was chosen.

These trials were not punishments, but rather opportunities to elevate his rank, to refine his soul, and to demonstrate that his loyalty was solely to Allah.

A Pure Heart and Sincere Faith

Allah chose Ibrahim (AS) because of the purity of his heart and the sincerity of his monotheism. Even in his youth, he rejected idols and questioned the polytheism of his people, seeking the truth with reason and humility.

وَإِنَّ مِن شِيعَتِهِۦ لَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ إِذْ جَآءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ

“Indeed, among his kind was Ibrahim, when he came to his Lord with a sound heart (qalbin salīm).” As-Saffat (37: 83–84)

The phrase “sound heart” implies a heart free of shirk, hypocrisy, and sin — qualities that allowed Ibrahim to receive divine guidance and intimacy with Allah.

Chosen to Establish a Nation of Faith

Not only was Ibrahim (AS) chosen as a leader in his own time, but he was also chosen to be the spiritual father of future Prophets AS and nations. From his descendants came prophets like Ishaq AS, Ya‘qub AS, Musa AS, Isa AS, and Muhammad ﷺ.

“And We granted him Ishaq and Ya‘qub in addition, and all [of them] We made righteous. And We made them leaders guiding by Our command.” Al-Anbiya’ (21: 72–73)

His prayers for righteous offspring and a believing nation were answered, making his legacy foundational to Islam.

Legacy of the Chosen One

Ibrahim’s selection teaches us several profound lessons:

  • Divine favour is earned through faith and perseverance, not birth or social status.
  • Real leadership in Islam is spiritual, guiding others to Allah through sincerity and example.
  • Trials are opportunities for spiritual elevation when met with patience and trust in Allah.
  • Being chosen by Allah is not a privilege alone — it’s a responsibility to uphold truth and sacrifice for it.

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was chosen by Allah because he embodied the highest virtues of submission, sincerity, and sacrifice. His selection was not just a badge of honour, but a testimony to the deep and enduring relationship of love and obedience he had with his Lord.
