This month, which culminated in the National Women’s Day celebration on Friday, August 9th, was a time to honour women in all spheres of life.

The City of Johannesburg has made a concerted effort to spotlight women and acknowledge their ongoing contributions to the fight for socio-economic freedom in the metro and the rest of the country.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating 30 years of democracy towards women’s development, “highlights women’s significant roles in our communities, workplaces, and homes. It’s a time to reflect on the journey traversed, the victories attained, and the challenges that still need to be addressed.

In an interview with Radio Islam International, Joburg’s spokesperson Virgil James emphasized the importance of remembering legendary women of the fifties who marched to Pretoria to break down the barriers of discrimination.

“Those women marched to Pretoria on the August 9th and paved the way for women to speak out for their rights and place as equals. These heroines can never be forgotten,” says James.

James highlighted those four brave women, namely, Lilian Ngoyi, Sophie De Bruyn, Raheem Moosa and Helen Joseph, led 20,000 women to the Union Buildings to take a stand against the abuse of past laws of the apartheid regime and the segregation that was experienced.

Meanwhile, Region G will be a hub of celebration throughout the month to honour and applaud women’s achievements. From panel discussions featuring influential women leaders to workshops on women’s health and wellness and networking events to foster connections, we will celebrate the remarkable contributions of women in our community.

Region G is home to various facilities and services for its residents. These include clinics, customer service centres, libraries, recreation centres, and swimming pools. The region is committed to providing excellent customer service and has several centres and offices where accounts can be paid and queries logged.

Its municipal head office is in Lenasia at the Civic Centre, corner of Rose and Eland avenues.
