Our Muezzin Musa has been giving the Azzan at our Masjid for the past 13 years. Muezzin Musa is from Malawi and has done Islamic Studies and an Aalim’s course before he came to South Africa.
Our Muezzin has been a blessing and is a God sent to the community of Park Rynie. He has served the community and our Masjid very patiently, with eagerness and he is very tolerant, Alhumdulilah.
When our Muezzin first started working and giving the Azaan at Park Rynie Masjid, the Masjid did not have any residence for the Muezzin on the Masjid premises or any place near the masjid, so he was living about 10 minutes from the Masjid. He therefore used to come walking from his home to give the asana and despite him living so far away he never gave the Azaan a minute late. He was so punctual despite the rain, cold, heat, day, and night he was always so punctual and dedicated to his job. Our Muezzin never complained about his situation and despite everything he was always prompt with giving the Azaan. We still have not found a place near the Masjid for him to stay.
The Park Rynie Masjid and the Trust could not afford to employ another person to clean the Masjid, wudhu Khana, toilets, washing of wudhu towels and the interior of the Masjid, our Muezzin was given this task as well and he continues to do the above tasks up to this day. He doubles as our Khadim and Muezzin, Alhumdulilah.
Due to the influx of Malawi immigrants in our area about 200 of them, our Muezzin has taken on the task of teaching his fellow country men the Quraan with tarweed and some Part 1 and 2 of Yassanal Quraan. He conducts these classes in the kitchen of Masjid, mainly after Asr and Esha. He also holds Taaleem classes after Asr.
Every Sunday afternoon our Muezzin and his wife hold classes for the Malawi sisters to learn Quraan, duas and other Islamic studies.
Most importantly our Muezzin keeps a record of the information of the Malawians in our area. He keeps record of their names, copies of their passport, address etc so if any information is required regarding any Malawi brothers, our Muezzin has it ready. This is important in all communities especially if there is a death or they go missing or fall ill.
Musa has been handed the responsibility of distributing sadaqah items which are sent to the Masjid by various organisations.
During Ramadhan he is responsible for laying out the tablecloth on the floor in the Sehan area for iftar and catering to over 200 Musalees. He together with some Malawi brothers clean up after Maghrib Salaah leaving the place spotless for Taraweeh salaah.
I have also asked our Muezzin to help assist with my Nana as he had a stroke and needed help. We asked our muezzin use to come every day exactly at 10am to our home to help my nana bath, change etc. We paid our Muezzin separately for coming to help our nana.
In December 2023 we went for umrah and we could not find anyone to take care of our pet cats, we asked muezzin to feed them, change their water and to make sure they were okay. He sent messages to keep us updated.
Many people have not seen and do not know how our Muezzin goes above and beyond not for him but for everyone in his communities. Our muezzin is responsible for so much and many people do not appreciate the efforts and dedication of such a great man. He is truly our unsung hero who has dedicated his life and time to the Park Rynie Masjid and our community. He has truly made a difference to our community, if we did not hear the Azaan, we would continue with our work but hearing the Azaan is a reminder to come to the masjid and read our Salaah on time. The moment I heard on the radio that our Muezzin could win a trip to go for Umrah we knew we had to do this as a token of appreciation for our Muezzin.
