Amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Dr Abuqadir Hamad, a frontline healthcare provider, spoke with Radio Islam International, shedding light on the catastrophic state of the healthcare system. Dr Hamad, who has been rendering medical assistance in Gaza for the past decade, highlighted the acute challenges faced by hospitals in the region.

He emphasised that the healthcare system in Gaza has long been struggling due to underfunding and shortages of crucial medical supplies and personnel. However, the current crisis has pushed the system to the brink of collapse. The hospitals are overwhelmed, lacking essential resources, and dependent on generators for power, which require fuel that has been unavailable since the start of the conflict.

Dr Hamad vividly described the dire circumstances, where patients, including those on ventilators and undergoing critical procedures, are at increased risk should the fuel supply run out. Compounded by heavy overcrowding and the threat of bombings, the situation has become akin to a nightmare for both patients and medical staff.

The doctor further lamented the predicament faced by the medical personnel, who not only witness the tragic loss of lives but also endure the trauma of seeing their own loved ones in the same harrowing condition. Despite their physical and emotional exhaustion, the medical staff continues to strive to uphold their professionalism and treat as many patients as possible.

Dr Hamad appealed to the global Muslim community to exert pressure for the establishment of safe corridors for the delivery of vital medical supplies and fuel. He stressed the necessity of observing international law and safeguarding the lives of civilians in the conflict.

The interview concluded with a poignant reflection on the need for collective introspection.

It is imperative to make dua, increase ibaadah and turn to Allah.
