Climate advocacy groups are embracing the Government of National Unity and its new cabinet members, particularly in the energy, environment, and minerals sectors. The organization expresses optimism that the country’s leaders will focus on sustainable energy for South Africa, with the urgent climate crisis in mind, while shifting away from investing in fossil fuels.
Lisa Makaula, an Advocacy Officer at the Green Connection, talks to Radio Islam International about Minister Gwede Mantashe’s reappointment to lead the Department of Minerals and Petroleum.
Makaula expresses surprise and disappointment in Minister Mantashe’s reappointment due to his history of underperformance.
Makaula stated that an essential issue is the department’s policies and projects that could harm the public and needed to be approved in the 6th Parliament.
She mentions our doubts about Minister Mantashe’s comeback and our ongoing challenges with his department concerning certain exploration activities. We advocate for policies to speed up the use of fossil fuels in South Africa during a climate emergency.
Makaula also highlighted that individuals on the ground face serious repercussions.
Makaula added that they sincerely wish the 7th parliament and the GNU to consider the people’s concerns, as it is crucial for a democratic society that the voices of the public are heard and taken into account.
