End-of-Year Fatigue

What is End-of-Year Fatigue

It’s that time of the year again. No, I am not talking about “lovely braais in the cool summer evenings,” or the “it’s the most wonderful time of the year” feeling. I’m talking about the time of the year when many of us are trying to get into the holiday spirit while juggling work deadlines and demands, but are struggling with low energy, as it seems like the home stretch continues to stretch. If you’re feeling what I’ve described, this feeling is called “year-end fatigue or burnout.”

So, what is year-end fatigue/burnout?

It is a common phenomenon that typically manifests as a sense of exhaustion, both mentally and physically, as individuals contend with a culmination of work-related stress, holiday obligations, and personal reflections on the year gone by. This fatigue can be triggered by a combination of factors, including increased work demands, the pressure to meet year-end goals, and the emotional intensity of the holiday season. Year-end fatigue can also be triggered by someone’s line of work.

The hardest part of any race is always towards the finish line and that is exactly how many feel towards the end of every year. People start to feel more tired, overwhelmed, irritable and burnt out as the year draws to a close, which is a real phenomenon known as year-end fatigue. Fatigue is a feeling of extreme weariness, tiredness, or lack of energy, and after spending most of the year studying or working, people tend to experience this in the last quarter.

Feeling fatigued can negatively affect how well you execute your duties, how you perform at work and how you experience your day-to-day life. It is also a known risk factor in car and workplace accidents, and you need to seek medical assistance if you find yourself experiencing extreme tiredness on a regular basis.

So, as we are already almost halfway into the last two months of the year, it is common to start feeling tired, burnt out, and fatigued. This is what we call year-end fatigue. Experts explain that year-end fatigue, also known as end-of-year burnout, is a frequent condition felt by many people as the year comes to a close. It generally shows as a sensation of tiredness, both mentally and physically, as people deal with a combination of work-related stress, holiday commitments, and personal thoughts on the previous year. This exhaustion can be caused by a variety of circumstances, including increased job responsibilities, pressure to accomplish year-end objectives, and the emotional intensity of the holiday season. Managing year-end exhaustion is critical for maintaining a good mix of work and self-care during this hectic time. This may be a difficult moment, with tension and pressure, sometimes self-imposed, to complete your objectives before the clock strikes 12. This sense of tiredness and burnout can make it difficult to keep focused and motivated to complete the year successfully.

Therefore, during this week, we will take a look at the symptoms, causes and tips to navigate this issue of year-end fatigue.
