Equal Education (EE) has issued a compelling media statement denouncing the recent appointment of Ncediso Goodenough “Zizi” Kodwa to the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education. Kodwa, who faces serious corruption charges and was appointed on July 3, 2024, despite public outcry, has drawn criticism from EE for his alleged involvement in corruption. This situation, with its potential to significantly impact the education sector, is a matter of grave concern.

In their statement, EE underlines the crucial function of the Portfolio Committee in Basic Education in monitoring the Department of Basic Education’s strategic plans and budget allocations. They claim that naming a person accused of corruption weakens the committee’s credibility and capacity to promote quality education in South Africa effectively, a matter of profound importance.

The advocacy group emphasizes the ethical concerns surrounding Kodwa’s appointment, stressing that roles in legislative oversight require individuals with flawless ethical standards. EE is worried about Kodwa’s supposed participation in corrupt activities, such as claims of taking bribes over R1.7 million, casting doubt on his suitability for the position.

Additionally, EE criticizes the ANC’s management of its step-aside resolution to tackle corruption within the party. The resolution, which calls for members facing serious allegations to step aside from positions of authority, was a significant step towards ensuring ethical standards in public service. However, Kodwa’s appointment goes against the essence of this resolution, as he is facing serious corruption charges, making it a direct contradiction to the party’s anti-corruption efforts.

A prominent voice in advocating for quality and equality in the public education system, EE’s stance mirrors wider worries about the integrity of parliamentary oversight and the trustworthiness of public representatives handling important duties.

The controversy surrounding Kodwa’s appointment underscores ongoing challenges in ensuring transparency and accountability within South Africa’s political institutions, particularly in roles directly impacting the nation’s educational future. EE’s statement serves as a reminder of the critical importance of upholding ethical standards in public service, particularly in roles as crucial as those within the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education.
