Finding the Balance Between Tawakkul and the Adoption of Means – Part 3

Moosa A.S. asks for Haroon A.S.
In Surah TaHa, Allah commanded Moosa A.S. to confront Firawn, the powerful and oppressive king of the time.
At this stage, Allah’s command was directed to Moosa A.S. alone as an individual. Despite having complete Tawakkul on Allah, Moosa A.S. recognized this to be a great challenge and a formidable task to accomplish. His response to this assignment provides many lessons such as teamwork, cooperation and the adoption of strategies.

Moosa A.S. took an inventory of the skills required for the job, assessed his own skills, and recognized his limitations. When completing a mission or trying to overcome a challenge, it is critical to understand what skills are needed and to identify one’s own strengths and weaknesses in the context of what is needed. Once a weakness is found, a strategy is needed. This strategy would fall under the category of the adoption the means.

Moosa A.S. recognized that his communication skills were not very effective. He asked Allah to remove the difficulty he had in speaking effectively.

“…and loosen the knot from my tongue so that they might fully understand my speech…”
He also asked Allah to assist him by allowing his brother to join him…
“…And my brother Haaron – he is far better in speech than I am. Send him, therefore, as a helper, so that he might [more eloquently] bear witness to my speaking the truth: for I fear indeed that they will give me the lie.”

These verses give us an insight into the balance between strategy and Tawakkul. There is no doubt that Allah could have spread the message of Islam without Haroon A.S.’s eloquence. There is also no doubt that Moosa A.S. knew that Allah’s assistance was with him. However, this was a strategy adopted through the great wisdom of Allah.

At times, we might require the assistance of others when we face challenges. That does not mean that our Imaan is weak. It simply means that we are using the means or adopting a strategy. The important thing is that in our hearts, we should constantly focus on Allah, knowing well that without Allah no challenge can be overcome.

When Moosa A.S. asked for the assistance of his brother, Haroon A.S., he knew that without Allah the mission to Firawn can never be successful.
