Two of South Africa’s biggest challenges are unemployment and The South African education system, characterised by crumbling infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms and relatively poor educational outcomes, is perpetuating inequality and, as a result failing too many of its children, with the poor hardest hit, according to a report published by Amnesty International in 2020.
A company is now committed to helping make learning in South African schools a better place to learn by assisting the government in making schools more conducive. Eric Tau, Founder and CEO of Moremi Kitchens, says the government cannot do it alone, and it is time for businesses to land their CSI hand.
The 38-year-old, who grew up in a village called Klipheuwel in Limpopo, moved, with his parents, to an informal settlement in Irene, Tshwane, in 1997.
The “a desk A Learner” initiative, started by Tau, provides double combination desks to enhance the learning environment for students.
The significance of giving kids the ability to study in comfortable, well-resourced and safe learning environments helps improve attention, reduce anxiety and support students’ emotional and behavioural regulation.
“We are hoping the learners that receive the type of assistance would put in their all in educating themselves and which helps to build a better South Africa in the future,” added Tau.
