Heavy Rain Expected to Continue Across Gauteng This Week.

Gauteng residents are on high alert as weather forecasts predict heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that may impact the region over the coming days. Speaking to Radio Islam International, Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has issued a strong warning, urging residents to exercise caution, particularly in flood-prone and low-lying areas.

“We are seeing changing weather patterns, and we want to remind residents not to travel during storms,” Mulaudzi emphasized. “Those in low-lying areas should avoid crossing rivers or streams as heavy rainfall is expected to persist into the summer season.”

Mulaudzi identified several flood-prone hotspots in Johannesburg, cautioning motorists to be especially vigilant. Key areas include Fourways’ Witkoppen Road near the bridge, Cape Valley Road in Soweto, and New Canada Road. These areas are known to flood during severe weather, presenting a high risk for drivers. Additionally, Mulaudzi warned that residents in informal settlements like Alexandra, Diepsloot, and parts of Soweto are particularly vulnerable to flooding.

Motorists are advised against attempting to cross flooded roads, often resulting in vehicles being swept away. “We frequently see motorists ignoring our barricades and risking their lives by attempting to cross flooded areas,” Mulaudzi said. “It’s critical that motorists adhere to these warnings to avoid potential tragedies.”

In cases of severe flooding, Johannesburg Emergency Services provides emergency shelters for those in affected areas. Mulaudzi explained that while these shelters offer immediate relief, the department emphasizes proactive measures to prevent the need for evacuation. “Our goal is to educate communities to avoid building in flood-prone areas, especially informal settlements where the risk of flooding is high.”

As Gauteng residents brace for more wet weather, Mulaudzi’s message is clear: “Exercise caution, respect road closures, and prioritize safety.”
