Over the last year, there has been a surprisingly great number of people who have started walking. Johannesburg north has seen streets buzzing with people while local parks have been upgraded.Â
So, where are the good spots to visit?
ZOO LAKE
Over the past few months, my personal favourite, security guards and much-needed upgrades, have taken place to ensure an enjoyable walk for families.Â
The Zoo Lake will also be seeing further upgrades as the committee has asked people to donate time and skill to help restore the zoo lake to its former glory.Â
WILDS IN HOUGHTON
For many years, the Wilds had become a no-go zone due to the area’s crime; however, from last year, extra measures have been taken and have become a favourite to visit. Take your picnic blanket and have a day out.Â
The views in the wild are spectacular, and the hike is low impact. The park also hosts a book box where you can leave a book and take a book.Â
CHELTONDALE PARK – NORWOOD
The park is a small one that is kept clean; it’s a small area with lots of open spaces and is excellent for bike rides.Â
WALTER SISULU BOTANICAL GARDENS
The famous picnic spot is home to a waterfall and a great hiking place. The hike around is really long and takes time, so be sure to bring snacks and lots of water. My five-year-old did it with us, and even though we completed it 20 000 steps later, the one thing we wished we had was lots of water. Â
