Growing Garlic

Garlic is not difficult to grow and if you are a foodie, you might well consider growing your own, as the garlic sold in shops is sometimes old and wrinkled. Follow these simple steps, and as garlic does not require much space, this is a perfect herb for a small garden.

STEP 1:
Split bulbs into individual cloves. Dig a little compost and bone meal into the soil to ensure good nutrition.

STEP 2:
Space the cloves about 18 cm apart, and plant with the pointy end facing upwards, at a depth approximately two to
three times the length of the clove. Garlic requires very little maintenance. Water during extended dry spells and keep the area weed-free, but be careful not to dig around the bulbs that are forming.

STEP 3:
The garlic will be ready in summer, and when the leaves
turn yellow you should stop watering. About 10 days later, when the leaves have died back, lift the bulbs out gently with a trowel. Do not wash as the soil will brush off
easily once the bulbs have cured. Leave to dry in a just-warm, shaded spot and ensure good air circulation around the bulbs. After several weeks the garlic should be ready to use in your favourite dishes!!

TIPS:
Garlic is a useful companion planter and grown near roses,
helps deter aphids.
