Renewal of the Heart and Soul
Phase 3 – Cleansing the Soul: Letting Go to Grow
Growing Through Self-Awareness
My dear brothers and sisters, we are reaching the end of this phase. Over these past days, we have diagnosed our spiritual sicknesses, returned to Allah in repentance, forgiven others, released our grudges, examined our attachment to the dunya, learned to live simply, and established the practice of Muhasabah — holding ourselves accountable.
But today, I want to show you the destination of all this work. I want you to see what happens when you consistently practice self-accountability with gentleness and honesty. I want you to understand Growing Through Self-Awareness.
Because self-awareness is not an end in itself. It is the path to growth. It is the light that shows you where you are so you can move toward where you need to be.
What Is Self-Awareness?
Self-awareness is knowing yourself — not your superficial preferences, but your deeper reality. It is knowing your strengths and your weaknesses. Your patterns of sin and your moments of sincerity. Your triggers and your shields. It is seeing yourself as you truly are, not as you pretend to be.
The Prophet ﷺ taught us to pray for this kind of awareness:
“اللَّهُمَّ آتِ نَفْسِي تَقْوَاهَا وَزَكِّهَا أَنْتَ خَيْرُ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا”
“O Allah, grant my soul its piety and purify it, for You are the best of those who purify it.” (Sahih Muslim)
This du’a acknowledges that we need Allah’s help to know ourselves and to purify ourselves. Self-awareness is a gift from Him.
The Levels of Self-Awareness
There are levels to this journey:
Level 1: You are unaware of your faults. You go through life thinking you are fine, while others see your issues clearly. This is the state of heedlessness.
Level 2: You become aware of your faults but deny them. You see the truth about yourself but cannot accept it. Defensiveness and blame-shifting characterize this stage.
Level 3: You acknowledge your faults but feel paralyzed. This is the danger zone. You see your problems but feel hopeless to change them. This is where gentle correction becomes essential.
Level 4: You acknowledge your faults and actively work on them. This is growth. This is the believer’s journey. You see your weakness, and you strive — with Allah’s help — to overcome it.
Level 5: You become proactive in preventing faults before they occur. This is the level of the righteous. You know your triggers, your vulnerable moments, your patterns. You guard yourself before the enemy attacks.
Each level is growth. Each level brings you closer to Allah.
How Self-Awareness Leads to Growth
Let me show you the mechanism. When you practice regular Muhasabah, several things happen:
First, you notice patterns. You realize, “Every time I skip Fajr, it’s because I stayed up too late doing something useless.” Awareness of the pattern allows you to address the root cause, not just the symptom.
Second, you catch sins early. A small sin, noticed immediately, is easy to repent from. A small sin, ignored, becomes a habit. A habit, ignored, becomes a part of your character. Self-awareness catches the weed before it takes over the garden.
Third, you become more honest with yourself. Pretending fades away. You stop justifying your faults. You stop blaming others. You stand before yourself — and before Allah — with raw honesty. And honesty is the foundation of all growth.
Fourth, you develop sensitivity. The more you examine your heart, the more sensitive it becomes. You start to notice spiritual states you never noticed before. You feel the heaviness of sin immediately. You taste the sweetness of obedience. Your heart comes alive.
Allah describes this sensitivity:
“إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَذِكْرَىٰ لِمَن كَانَ لَهُ قَلْبٌ أَوْ أَلْقَى السَّمْعَ وَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ”
“Indeed in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present [in mind].” (Surah Qaf, 50: 37)
A heart that is present. A heart that listens. This is the aware heart. This is the growing heart.
The Fruits of Self-Awareness
What does this growth produce?
Humility. When you know your faults, you cannot look down on others. You know your own struggles. You become gentle with people because you are gentle with yourself.
Gratitude. When you see your weaknesses, you appreciate Allah’s guidance more. You realize that every good deed is a gift, not an achievement.
Authenticity. You stop performing for people. You stop pretending to be what you are not. You become real — with yourself, with others, and with Allah.
Nearness to Allah. This is the greatest fruit. The one who knows themselves knows their Lord. The one who sees their need sees His sufficiency. The one who feels their weakness feels His strength.
Practical Steps to Deepen Self-Awareness
- Continue Daily Muhasabah. This is non-negotiable. Five minutes every night. Review, repent, resolve.
- Seek Feedback from Trusted People. Ask someone who loves you: “What do you see in me that I might be missing?” The Prophet ﷺ said:
“الْمُؤْمِنُ مِرْآةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ”
“The believer is the mirror of his brother.” (Abu Dawud)
A trusted friend can show you what you cannot see yourself.
- Study the Quran and Seerah. The stories of previous nations and the lives of the Prophets AS are mirrors. You see yourself in their struggles and their triumphs.
- Make Du’a for Self-Awareness. Ask Allah to show you yourself. Ask Him to reveal your faults so you can fix them. This is a brave du’a, but it is the du’a of those who truly want to grow.
My brothers and sisters, do not let this month pass without committing to ongoing self-awareness. Do not let the habits you built here fade. Keep the mirror held up. Keep examining. Keep growing.
Purification. Remembrance. Prayer. This is the path. And it begins with awareness.
May Allah grant us self-awareness that leads to growth, and growth that leads to Him. Ameen.
