The country will be remembering Nelson Mandela this week. The world remembers the iconic struggle hero on Nelson Mandela Day on Tuesday. At the beginning of August, the residents of Lawley, south of Johannesburg, will remember Mandela as they once again get the opportunity to participate in a soccer tournament, which was established to fight gangsterism and drug abuse among young people living in the area.
Born and raised in Lawley, Sibonelo Mtshali, organizer of the tournament, uses the tool of hosting a soccer tournament to assist young people in reaching their goals.
“Day in and day out when I look at the young people in Lawley and surrounding areas, I see myself in them and aim to assist them in becoming greater individuals,” says Mtshali.
The tournament aims to unite young people from all walks of life and create a platform for them to express their talent while being watched by many people.
The tournament is hosted in honour of the late Sihle Mtshali, brother of Sibonelo, who greatly loved soccer.
Every year on the 18 of July, the birthday of Nelson Mandela, South Africans devote 67 minutes to helping others. It is 67 minutes to mark the 67 years Mandela spent as a public servant. By devoting 67 minutes to volunteering, we contribute to society and solidarity.
