Just days after Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Fold Smartphone, other manufacturers are following suit, with Chinas Huawei unveiling its own foldable smartphone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Called the Huawei Mate X, the device will have two back-to-back screens, a 6.6-inch display on the front and a 6.3-inch display on the rear, which unfold to become an eight-inch tablet display.

Huawei’s in-device hinge allows the phone to measure 5.4mm thick when unfolded, and 10.9mm thick when folded.

Huawei says the Mate X is the “world’s fastest foldable 5G smartphone”, and that its position as a manufacturer of 5G network infrastructure has given it a unique advantage because the company was able to test the phone on internal 5G networks before release.

Chief executive of Huawei’s consumer business Richard Yu said the Mate X represented “a voyage into the uncharted”.

The Mate X (8G RAM, 512GB storage, Kirin 980 processor) will sell for €2,299 ( R 36,100) when it launches in mid-2019.
