Increasing in Good Deeds in Latter Life

Allah says: “Did We not grant you a sufficient age in your life so that lessons could have been learnt by those who wished to take lesson?” [Faṭir 35: 37]

Ibn ʿAbbas RA and other scholars say: “Its meaning is: Did We not grant you a life of 60 years?” This view is supported by a ḥadith that we will quote later on, inshā-Allāh. Others are of the opinion that it refers to 18 years. Yet others feel that it refers to 40 years. This latter opinion is that of al-Ḥasan , al-Kalbi, Masruq and Ibn ʿAbbas RA. It is stated that when any resident of Madinah reached the age of 40, he would devote himself completely for the worship of Allah. Another opinion is that it refers to the age of maturity.

Allah says: “The issuer of warnings has come to you.”

Ibn ʿAbbas RA and the majority of scholars say that the “issuer of warnings” refers to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʿIkramah, Ibn ʿUyaynah and others RA are of the opinion that it refers to grey hair (which should serve to warn a person of his impending death). And Allah knows best.

Life and time are assets that need to be utilised efficiently, particularly towards the end of one’s life. One who reaches old age should focus his attention towards the Hereafter by doing good deeds. Old age is the final stage and termination of a person’s life, hence if this time is used in worship and obedience, there is hope of a good ending.

EASY GOOD DEED – WUDHU

Ablution or Wudhu with full observance of its rules according to Sunnah is a sublime act for which the Hadith has promised many merits and rewards.

Abu Hurairah RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When any one of you sleeps, Satan ties three knots at the back of his neck. He recites this incantation at every knot: ‘You have a long night, so sleep.’ If he awakes and remembers Allah, one knot is loosened. If he performs Wudu’, the (second) knot is loosened; and if he performs prayer, (all) knots are loosened. He begins his morning in a happy and refreshed mood; otherwise, he gets up in bad spirits and sluggish state.” [Bukhari and Muslim].

Abu Huraira RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When a Muslim or a believer washes his face in ablution, every sin that he committed with his eyes will be washed away with the last drop of water. When he washes his hands, every sin that he committed with his hands will be washed away with the last drop of water. When he washes his feet, every sin that he committed with his feet will be washed away with the last drop of water, until he emerges purified from sin.” [Muslim]

Uthman bin Affan RA narrates that Nabi ﷺ said, “Whoever performs a perfect Wudhu, the sins are washed off from his body to such an extent they even come out from beneath his nails.

Abu Huraira RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Verily, my nation will be called on the Day of Resurrection as brightly radiant from the traces of ablution. Whoever among you is able to extend his radiance, let him do so. [Bukhari]
