The Information Regulator has issued a summons to the South African Police Service, requesting details on the Krugersdorp rape victims’ personal information. The eight women were raped by a gang of illegal miners in Krugersdorp a month ago. Personal data of the victims were released on WhatsApp groups.
In an interview with Radio Islam international, the Information Regulator’s Alison Tilley said they demand answers from SAPS on leaking crucial information.
“SAPS has given us one piece of information, but unfortunately, that does not deal with 95% of what we have asked. So, we had to summon them, and we are going to ask them to come and explain to us exactly what has happened in this situation, which will then last to deciding on how to go,” explained Tilley.
She said the regulator believes that leaking the information, allegedly by SAPS officials, constitutes interference.
“What has happened is that a WhatsApp was circulating and was referred to us? And that WhatsApp had in it the personal information of the Krugersdorp rape survivors, including names and addresses and ages and what the criminal charges were. So, that’s a serious breach of the POPI Act and also a violation of the right to privacy of these victims,” she said.
