International Arabic Language Day

December 18th is International Arabic Language Day. The purpose of World Arabic Language Day 2023 is to highlight the importance of language in bringing together constructive dialogue between cultures, shaping perceptions, and promoting understanding in the current global landscape of uncertainty and turmoil.

“Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.” – Rita Mae Brown

What is International Arabic Language Day?

The Arabic language has long been famous for its contribution to poetry and the arts. It is a language with established power and has created wonderful aesthetic verses that captivate hearts. Therefore, it was decided that the slogan of the celebration of the International Arabic Language Day for the year 2023 would be

“The Language of Poetry and Arts”

This year’s celebration coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the declaration of Arabic as an official language at the United Nations. UNESCO, aspiring to praise the glory of the Arabic language on the poetic and artistic levels, will bring together researchers, academics, youth, and heads of international bodies.

World Arabic Language Day is a consistent platform for deepening discussions on the impact of the Arabic language in shaping knowledge, societal transformations through poetry, as well as its impact on the arts, while promoting cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue.

The meetings held as part of this year’s gathering revolve around the following topics

Philosophy and poetry: The contribution of Arabic poetry to the formation of knowledge and social transformations

Arabic language and arts: expanding the horizons of cultural diversity

Arab Latinos: The Arab Imprint in Latin America and the Caribbean

History ofInternational Arabic Language Day

International Arabic Language Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to celebrate the Arabic language’s role in promoting cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding. The date chosen for this observance is December 18th every year.

The significance of December 18th lies in the fact that it marks the day when Arabic was adopted as one of the six official languages of the United Nations in 1973. This decision recognized the historical and cultural importance of the Arabic language, not only within the Arab world but also as a language with a rich literary, scientific, and cultural heritage.

International Arabic Language Day aims to celebrate the language’s contributions to human civilization, highlight its cultural and historical significance, and promote multilingualism and cultural diversity. It provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of linguistic diversity and the role that languages play in fostering mutual understanding. The day is marked by various events, activities, and initiatives that promote the beauty and richness of the Arabic language.
