Islamic Motivation of Environmental Conservation Part 4

We continue to take a look at reasons as to why we need to conserve and preserve nature and the environment around us.

Consideration of the availability of clean water
Another source of wealth that is very important to be taken care of is water, a source of life for humans, plants and animals.

Allah Almighty says in the Quran:
Have not the unbelievers ever considered that the skies and the earth were once one mass, then We split them asunder? And We have created every living thing from water. Will they still not believe? [Al-Ambiyaa: 30]

In essence, water is a precious and valuable asset. But because Allah gave it in the sea, rivers and even the rain for free, people often do not appreciate water as it should be. But one important thing that deserves reflection is that water is not a commodity that can be grown and developed. It is not the same as the wealth of vegetable or animal. That is why Allah Almighty, mentions in Surah Al-Mu’minun, Surah 23 verse 18,

And We send down water from the skies in accordance with a measure [set by Us], and then We cause it to lodge in the earth: but, behold, We are most certainly able to withdraw this [blessing]!

Especially when human beings cannot live without water, while water quantity is limited, so people are obliged to maintain and preserve this precious wealth. Never take counter-productive measures, like contaminating, damaging and others. Including, not using water excessively (israf).

Avoid damage and keep the balance of nature.
One of the most important Islamic guidance in relation to the environment is how to maintain the balance of nature / environment and without destroying existing habitats. Because there is no doubt that Allah has created everything in the universe with a specific calculation.

The One Who created the seven heavens, one above another, you will not see any flaw in the creation of the Compassionate. Look once again, do you see any flaw? [Al-Mulk: 3]

Allah created nature and the environment so perfectly, the greenery, the beauty, the gardens, the sweet-smelling flowers, the rivers, oceans and seas, the waterfalls as they cascade from high slopes; let us then ask ourselves, for who did Allah create all this? Was it not for the benefit of man? Why is man so ignorant to then go and destroy the very thing upon which his life depends!?
