The Lindokuhle Mnguni Occupation in Rosherville, Johannesburg, is up in arms as they accuse McDonald’s of dumping rubbish in their community. This led to the residents’ organizing strikes on Monday and Wednesday last week.
Residents blocked the South Rand Road for almost all of last week on Monday and Wednesday. The police were not violent toward the protestors, but some taxi drivers assaulted community members during the blockade. The organization says they are not done with protest action until they are met.
The Lindokuhle Mnguni Occupation is now one year old and has 150 homes. The land was occupied in early February last year. Most of the comrades who first occupied the land rented in Extension Five of the Good Hope shack settlement in Germiston, nearby.
The Occupation was named after Lindokuhle Mnguni, the leader of the eKhenana Commune in Durban, who was assassinated on 20 August 2022.
“A very serious problem is that rich people from Elandspark, building contractors and businesses, especially fast food restaurants such as McDonalds and KFC, are dumping their rubbish here at a huge scale. The building contractors dump rubble here but also broken glass which is dangerous to our children. McDonalds dump here every Monday and Friday. Dumpers have threatened to shoot us when we tell them not to dump here,” the Occupation says.
The Occupation added, “we are going to continue the strikes until our demands are met. We are not going to stop the struggle.”
