Consumers often turn to targeted or untargeted boycott lists to guide purchasing decisions. However, to my dismay, this week, I’ve realised that many of the alternative brands we rely on may not be true alternatives after all.
While we gravitate towards local, small-scale brands, it’s disheartening to discover that numerous of these enterprises have been acquired by major corporations on our boycott lists. Beyond merely switching brands, it’s crucial for us, as consumers, to understand the reasons behind these boycotts. What role do these companies play in perpetuating injustice, particularly in the ongoing struggles faced by the people of Palestine? We must move beyond mindlessly following internet trends and instead educate ourselves on how our choices impact communities worldwide. It’s not just about what we buy but also about the values we support and the difference we can make.
