Renewal of the Heart and Soul
Phase 5 – Transformation: Becoming Who Allah Loves
Life After Ramadhan
My dear brothers and sisters, today is the 30th day of Ramadhan. In a few hours, the sun will set, and this blessed month will be behind us. The nights of prayer, the days of fasting, the special atmosphere of mercy and forgiveness — all of it will become a memory.
And tomorrow, a new reality begins: life after Ramadhan.
For some, this is a time of fear. They worry they will lose what they built. For others, it is a time of resolve. They are determined to carry the spirit of Ramadhan forward. And for all of us, it is a test — the real test of whether this month has truly renewed our hearts.
As we complete our journey of heart renewal, we speak about Life After Ramadhan.
The Real Test Begins Now
Anyone can be good in Ramadhan. The atmosphere helps. The community helps. The shayateen are chained. Fasting is easier when everyone around you is fasting. Prayer is easier when the mosque is full.
But the real test is after. When life returns to normal. When the shayateen are released. When the world calls you back to its distractions. When you are alone with your choices.
This is where true faith is proven. This is where renewal either takes root or withers.
The Example of the Companions رضي الله عنهم
The Companions رضي الله عنهم understood this. They did not treat Ramadhan as a one-month vacation from sin. They treated it as training for the rest of the year. The habits they built in Ramadhan — the early rising, the night prayer, the Quran reading, the charity — they carried forward.
Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهم used to fast almost every day after Ramadhan. Not because it was obligatory, but because the habit of fasting had become part of his nature. Ramadhan had changed him.
What Life After Ramadhan Should Look Like?
Life after Ramadhan should not be a return to the old you. It should be the emergence of the new you — the you that Ramadhan created.
That means:
- Your prayers remain a priority. You prayed five times a day in Ramadhan, often in congregation. Do not let that slip. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“إِنَّ بَيْنَ الرَّجُلِ وَبَيْنَ الشِّرْكِ وَالْكُفْرِ تَرْكَ الصَّلَاةِ”
“Indeed, between a man and shirk and kufr is abandoning the prayer.” (Muslim)
Hold onto your prayers. They are your lifeline.
- The Quran remains your companion. You read it daily in Ramadhan. Do not abandon it now. Even one page a day keeps your heart connected. The Quran is not just for Ramadhan; it is for all times.
- Your tongue remains guarded. You controlled your speech in Ramadhan — no gossip, no lies, no harsh words. Continue this. Let your speech be gentle and true.
- Your charity continues. You gave generously in Ramadhan. Do not stop. Regular charity, even small amounts, purifies the heart and protects your wealth.
- Your night prayers continue. You stood in Taraweeh and Tahajjud. Now, continue with at least two rak’ah of night prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“أَفْضَلُ الصَّلَاةِ بَعْدَ الْفَرِيضَةِ صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ”
“The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.” (Muslim)
- Your fasting continues. Fast the six days of Shawwal. Fast Mondays and Thursdays. Fast the white days (13th, 14th, 15th of each month). Keep the habit alive.
The Danger of the First Week
The first week after Ramadhan is the most dangerous. This is when old habits try to return. This is when Shaytan attacks hardest. Be extra vigilant in these first days. Guard your prayers. Guard your tongue. Guard your heart.
If you can survive the first week, you can survive the year.
The Heart After Ramadhan
Your heart has been renewed. But renewal is not a one-time event; it is an ongoing process. Just as you maintain your physical health with daily habits, you must maintain your spiritual health with daily worship.
Think of your heart as a garden. Ramadhan was the season of planting and growth. Now comes the season of maintenance — watering, weeding, protecting. If you neglect it, the garden will wither. If you tend it, it will flourish.
A Du’a for Life After Ramadhan
As you prepare to leave this month, make this du’a:
“اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ خَيْرَ عُمْرِي آخِرَهُ، وَخَيْرَ عَمَلِي خَوَاتِمَهُ، وَخَيْرَ أَيَّامِي يَوْمَ أَلْقَاكَ”
“O Allah, make the best of my life its end, the best of my deeds my final ones, and the best of my days the day I meet You.”
Concluding Note on the Theme
My dear brothers and sisters, our theme throughout this journey has been renewal of the heart and soul. Today, as Ramadhan departs, we understand that renewal is not the end of the journey — it is the beginning.
A renewed heart does not stop renewing. It continues to turn to its Lord, day after day, seeking His pleasure, striving for His love, longing for His meeting. It stumbles but gets up. It falls but repents. It weakens but seeks strength.
This is the heart that will survive the test of life after Ramadhan. This is the heart that will carry you to Jannah.
May Allah make our hearts firm, accept our Ramadhan, and grant us a life of continued renewal. Ameen.
