The head of the Africa Desk at the Media Review Network (MRN) Mustafa Mheta says tensions continue to escalate between Morocco and Algeria over the Western Sahara question.
Mhehta was speaking to Radio Islam on Tuesday about the latest news from the African continent.
The Western Sahara conflict dates to the time when the territory, rich in phosphates and fishing grounds, was a Spanish colony, resisted by the Polisario Front with Algerian backing but also claimed by Morocco.
Mehta says hostilities between Morocco and Algeria have taken on a new dimension.
“We could be seeing another conflict there. These countries have gone to war before when Morocco was claiming part of Algeria.”
Mehta says the escalations of the conflict is a result of US meddling.
“Today the war we are worried about, the tension has been created by the former president by forcing Morocco to normalise with Israel in return for him acknowledging Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara.”
Mehta says Morocco is gearing up for war.
“The Moroccans are busy at the moment buying weapons. The missiles, the anti-missile batteries that they are buying from the United States and Frances. Preparing for what? War!”
Mehta says Algeria is the number one country that is supporting the aspirations for self-determination in Western Sahara.
