[LISTEN] China’s Vivo Smartphones Launch in SA

Vivo, one of China’s biggest smartphone brands has expanded its global footprint with the launch of its Y-series: the Y11 and Y91C smartphones in South Africa. 

Competing in a saturated market, Vivo has entered the arena ahead of the holiday season saying it provides consumers with the choice to own premium phone technology at an accessible price point.

Vivo is owned by BBK Electronics, which also owns the smartphone brands Oppo, OnePlus and RealMe.

The Y11 runs a Funtouch OS 9.1 system and has a.35-inch Halo Full View Display with a screen-to-body ratio of 89% with narrow bezels on all sides.

Additionally, the Y11 is packed with AI dual camera setup of a 13MP Main Camera and a 2MP Depth Camera and has a massive, high capacity 5000mAh battery.

The Y19 has a 6.22-inch Halo FullView display that gives it a screen-to-body ratio of 88.6%. It has a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front facing camera.  It is also fitted with a 4030mAh large-capacity battery

Hawa Hyath, Marketing Director, VIVO mobile South Africa says the company is very excited to be bringing this technology to South Africa. 

“Essentially our brand culture, we are focused on technology and style. So it’s very much driven around creating that extraordinary life for young consumers. That’s where we are positioning ourselves. We are also focused around gaming and sports.” 

The Y11 is priced at R2,699 and the Y91C at R1,899 and will be available first on Vodacom while Vivo is  n talks with MTN South Africa and other mobile operators about launching the phones on their networks.

Vivo says more smartphones are expected to be launched, including a 5G device in the second half of 2020,

To launch VIVO will kick off with a competition on 5FM and in partnership with TikTok. Listeners stand a chance to win a new device and R2,500 daily. The competition runs from December 7 for two weeks.
