My Lord Nurtures Me

Remembrance of Allah (Spiritual Nurturing)

One of the greatest ways in which our Lord nurtures us spiritually is through His remembrance (Dhikr). Dhikr is not just the verbal repetition of Allah’s names or supplications; it is a means of strengthening our hearts, purifying our souls, and deepening our connection with our Creator. Allah has commanded us to engage in Dhikr, and He has promised peace, blessings, and guidance for those who remember Him. Allah says:

فَٱذْكُرُونِىٓ أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَٱشْكُرُوا۟ لِى وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ

“So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.” (Al-Baqarah 2: 152)

This verse alone shows how Dhikr is not just a one-sided action; when we remember Allah, He remembers us in a way that brings divine mercy, blessings, and spiritual elevation.

  1. The Power of Dhikr in Purifying the Soul

One of the primary ways Allah nurtures us through remembrance is by purifying our hearts and souls. The world is full of distractions, temptations, and sins, but constant remembrance of Allah acts as a spiritual cleanser, preventing the heart from becoming rusted. The Prophet ﷺ said:

Everything has a cleaner, and the cleaner of the hearts is the remembrance of Allah… (Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 519)

The heart of a believer is spiritually alive through Dhikr, while the heart of one who neglects it becomes hardened. Scientific studies even show that meditation and mindfulness (which are akin to Dhikr) reduce stress, improve emotional stability, and enhance focus.

  1. Dhikr Brings Inner Peace and Tranquility

The modern world is filled with anxiety, depression, and stress. People seek happiness in material wealth, relationships, and entertainment, yet true peace can only be found in the remembrance of Allah. Allah says:

أَلَا بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ ٱلْقُلُوبُ

“Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (Ar-Ra’d 13: 28)

How Dhikr nurtures our spiritual well-being:

  • It removes negative thoughts and fears by reinforcing trust in Allah.
  • It brings a sense of contentment, as we focus on the eternal rather than the temporary.
  • It increases our patience and resilience in the face of trials.

Neuroscience suggests that repeated spiritual affirmations or prayers activate the brain’s reward centres, increasing positive emotions and reducing anxiety. This aligns with how Dhikr calms the soul and nurtures inner peace.

  1. Remembrance of Allah as a Shield Against Shaytaan

Shaytaan’s primary goal is to distract humans from remembering Allah, leading them toward heedlessness and sin. However, Dhikr acts as a spiritual shield, preventing negative influences from affecting the heart. The Prophet ﷺ said:

مَثَلُ الَّذِي يَذْكُرُ رَبَّهُ وَالَّذِي لاَ يَذْكُرُ مَثَلُ الْحَىِّ وَالْمَيِّتِ

“The example of one who remembers his Lord and one who does not remember Him is like that of the living and the dead.” (Bukhari 6407)

Ways in which Dhikr protects us:

  • Morning and evening Adhkar (supplications) act as daily shields against harm.
  • Saying ‘Bismillah’ before actions prevents Shaytan’s interference.
  • Reciting Ayat-ul-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255) protects from evil throughout the night.

Studies in psychology show that those who engage in regular positive affirmations and spiritual practices are less prone to negative thought cycles, which aligns with the protective nature of Dhikr.

The remembrance of Allah is a divine gift that nurtures us spiritually, providing peace, protection, and purification. Whether through Tasbeeh (praising Allah), Istighfar (seeking forgiveness), or daily Adhkar, Dhikr elevates our hearts and brings us closer to our Creator.
