My Lord Nurtures Me

Access to the Unseen (Ghayb)

One of the very profound ways in which Allah nurtures us spiritually is by granting us access to aspects of the unseen (Ghayb) through revelation, signs, and faith. The unseen includes realities that are beyond human perception — such as Allah’s divine knowledge, Angels, the Hereafter, and the Decree (Qadr). While humans have limited access to the unseen, Allah, in His wisdom and mercy, has provided us with glimpses through the Holy Qur’an, the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ, and our spiritual intuition. Allah says:

وَعِندَهُۥ مَفَاتِحُ ٱلْغَيْبِ لَا يَعْلَمُهَآ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ

“And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him.” (Al-An’am 6: 59)

This verse reminds us that the unseen is entirely within Allah’s knowledge, and He reveals only what is beneficial for us. Understanding this nurtures our spirituality by increasing our trust in Him, strengthening our faith, and guiding us to live righteously.

  1. Strengthening our Faith Through Belief in the Unseen

Belief in the unseen (Iman bil-Ghayb) is the foundation of faith. True faith does not rely only on what we can see and touch but also on our conviction in the realities Allah has informed us about. Allah says:

“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those who fear Allah — those who believe in the unseen…” (Al-Baqarah 2: 2-3)

How belief in the unseen nurtures spirituality:

  • It strengthens trust in Allah’s wisdom, even when we do not understand His plans.
  • It cultivates patience and perseverance in times of hardship.
  • It encourages sincerity in worship, as we acknowledge that Allah is always watching.

Psychological studies suggest that people who believe in a higher purpose tend to be more resilient in dealing with life’s challenges, aligning with the benefits of Iman bil-Ghayb.

  1. The Unseen World of Angels and Divine Assistance

Islam teaches that angels (Mala’ika) are part of the unseen world, continuously serving Allah’s command. They record our deeds, protect us, and play a role in divine interventions. Allah says:

“For each person, there are angels in succession before and behind him, protecting him by Allah’s command.” (Ar-Ra’d 13: 11)

How belief in angel’s nurtures spirituality:

  • It reassures us that we are never alone, as angels are always present.
  • It motivates us to be mindful of our actions, knowing they are recorded.
  • It encourages reliance on Allah, as we believe in divine protection.
  1. The Knowledge of the Hereafter – A Motivation for Righteousness

One of the greatest unseen realities is the Hereafter (Akhirah), including Paradise and Hell. Our limited knowledge of the unseen realities of the Hereafter serves as a test and a motivation for righteous living. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no heart has imagined what Allah has prepared for the righteous.” (Bukhari 4779, Muslim 2824)

How knowledge of the Hereafter nurtures spirituality:

  • It instils a sense of accountability, reminding us that our actions have consequences.
  • It provides hope and motivation to strive for Jannah (Paradise).
  • It nurtures contentment, as we trust that worldly struggles are temporary.

Our Lord nurtures us spiritually by granting us access to aspects of the unseen in a way that strengthens our faith, deepens our understanding, and guides our actions. Whether through belief in angels, the Hereafter, divine decree, or revelation, the unseen is a reminder of Allah’s infinite knowledge and mercy.
