My Lord Nurtures me

Encouraging Reflection on Creation

Islam is a religion that deeply values reflection (Tafakkur) and contemplation (Tadabbur). One of the most powerful ways Allah nurtures our minds is by encouraging us to reflect on His creation. The vastness of the universe, the intricacies of nature, and the signs within ourselves all point to Allah’s existence, power, and wisdom.

When we reflect on creation, we develop:

  • Stronger faith (Iman) – Recognizing Allah’s greatness.
  • Mental clarity and peace – Appreciating the harmony in the world.
  • A sense of purpose – Understanding our role in creation.
  1. The Qur’an Calls Us to Reflect on Creation

Allah Commands Us to Look at the Universe

Throughout the Qur’an, Allah repeatedly commands us to observe and think deeply about His creation. Reflection leads to certainty in faith, wisdom, and gratitude.

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying:) ‘Our Lord! You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You! Protect us from the punishment of the Fire.’” (Aal-e-Imran 3: 190-191)

This verse teaches that true wisdom comes from constant reflection on creation. Those who ponder deeply recognize that everything in the universe has a purpose and ultimately leads back to Allah.

Aisha (RA) reported: One night, the Prophet (ﷺ) stood up (for prayer) and said, “O Aisha, let me worship my Lord.” So he performed wudu and began to pray. He wept so much that his beard became wet. He continued crying until the ground beneath him was wet. When Bilal came to call him for prayer, he said, “O Messenger of Allah, why do you weep when Allah has forgiven all your past and future sins?” The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, “O Bilal! How can I not weep when this verse has been revealed to me?” Then he recited, ‘Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth…’” (Ibn Hibban 620)

  1. Signs of Allah in the Natural World

Allah’s Creation Points to His Power

Every part of creation — from the stars to the smallest atom—carries proof of Allah’s existence and wisdom.

“Do they not look at the camels — how they are created? And at the sky — how it is raised? And at the mountains — how they are set firm? And at the earth — how it is spread out?” (Ghashiyah 88:  17-20)

These verses urge us to observe nature with curiosity and appreciation. Science today reveals fascinating details about camels’ adaptations, mountains’ stabilizing role, and the universe’s fine-tuning—all signs of intelligent design.

The Power of Reflection

  • Tafakkur (deep reflection) strengthens faith and wisdom.
  • Nature, the universe, and ourselves are all signs of Allah.
  • Reflecting on creation leads to gratitude and awe of Allah’s greatness.
